I've just gotten into sheath knives and see lots of pics with short lanyards on them online. I can understand a longer lanyard to slip around your wrist to keep from dropping the knife but don't know what a shorter one would accomplish. Is it to help pull the knife out of a longer sheath or is it some "coolness" factor that I'm missing?
Inside of my pack I keep a backup skeletonized fixed blade knife that clips to the pack via the lanyard. My EDC knife (folder) stays on a retractable lanyard affixed to my bino harness. I keep whatever knife I’m taking to butcher an animal in my kill kit with a retractable lanyard, when an animal is down it replaces my EDC knife on my bino harness. I always put its respective sheath on the MOLLE underneath the harness. It’s nice to be able to go hands-free without laying your knife down, especially when they decide to die somewhere mucky/brushy.
