Found this in my storage unit, been missing for years; giving it a vinegar bath to remove the rust (and unfortunately some of the hammer marks) Sentimental value. Dad gave it to me when I was in the Army; He isn’t able to work anymore. Handle is split at the top and keeps slipping. I think there is enough meat left in the handle to move the blade down. If the fit of the head is not too loose you might try a produce made for tightening chair rungs. It's called Chair-loc and is available in most hardware stores, I believe I got my bottle at Walmart. Inexpensive and worth a try.

Looks like a easy repair. Where are you located? I’m located in Bowling Green, KY. Happy to ship to/from wherever, just want this done right. It will def be in my pack once I get it repaired; hopefully for a long time.

Nice project.
I have been making hammer, axe, chisel, file, bolt knob handles, shovels, etc, compulsively for years.
I like projects that can be done in a day.
Today it was African Blackwood from Ebay.
Yesterday it was Black Locust I found in the ditch after the utility pole guys trimmed the trees.
Hornbeam the day before that.
Sometimes I rework the original handle.
I have a tank of washing soda and water with +28 Volts DC hooked up to a sacrificial piece of steel. The axe head would go in the tank with with ground attached.
An hour of that will get out the rust, but leaves a black slime on the steel. Then it is off to the spinning wire wheel.
I have been honing with a flat diamond steel plate after grinding with a diamond wheel.
