What is the best twist rate for 22 WMR ? I am a little confused between the difference between 1 in 9 vs 1 in 16 ? What are the advantages and/or disadvantages between them ? Ben

Why would you use a 1 in 9"???? Are you planning in handloadng your .22 mag with slugs over 50 grains? Overturquing high quality, well balance slugs is doable. The problem is - pretty much NONE of the currently loaded .22 magnum bullets are of that quality. A .224" groove diameter 1-14" is about perfect & a 1-12" would be the fastest I would go.

16" twist has been the standard since the WMR was introduced. It will stabilize any bullet currently loaded in WMR ammunition. I can see no advantage to a faster twist.

Maybe the folks at Savage would be the best folks to answer that question.. I could see using a 1-9 for exclusively shooring heavy bullet subsonic ammo like the Aguila 22lr 60g SS loads , but no such ammo exists for the 22 mag.

The Savage I was looking at was a wood stocked Savage Model B22 Magnum G. The Savage web site says it has a 1 in9 twist. I'm now wondering if the rifle is worth buying ?

Could that be a typo ? I looked at that B22 Magnum G on their web site and it does indeed say 1 in 9 twist and nothing as to why or what bullets weights are suitable. Never heard of that on a 22 mag. Or do they know something I don't ?

I noticed Ruger puts a 1/9 twist on the LCR's in 22 WMR.
I figured it was to aid expansion at lower velocities.

I have a Sigle Six convertible with 1/14 twist.
It will stabilize the Aguila 60gr subsonic. They shoot very accurate too.

I don't know what twist my Ruger 10/22 magnum has, but it won't stabilize a Federal 50gr. I bet it is a 1-14". And it may be that your rifle just does not like that slug- no matter what the twist. I had a late 1980's 77/22 .22 mag with likely the same twist that consistently shot that 50g Federal ammo into 1/2" at 50 yards. It was by far it's favorite load. Lighter bullets shot patterns in that gun.
