Scored the coveted Wenaha elk tag and a for sure Trout Crk Mts traditional archery deer. Seriously wound up about the elk. Been a long time since I did an Oregon elk hunt.

We did pretty well.

We drew Buck Deer (57-Sled Springs), Antlerless Deer (660A2 Upper Wallowa Valley Number 2) and Spike Only Elk (157Y Sled Springs), No Goat or Antelope,

Congrats 1minute, that will be a fun hunt for you & good hunting to you! Just got in - finally. Only drew an E. Biggs deer tags on my 2nd choice, nada on everything else.

Wyoming will also be up today - good luck everyone!

I drew High Cascade buck as 2nd choice, otherwise point savers. This tag is good for Sept 7 - 15. If you don't fill your tag that week, it is also valid for regular western Oregon blacktailed deer season (Sept 28-Nov 1).

I haven't decided whether I'll buy the OTC Cascade elk tag (Oct 12-18) or not.

Unfortunately, Cookie will not be along for the elk outing. She's not about to abandon her traditional 3-week deer outing which means she'll have our crew cab rig, travel trailer, and wall tent tied up while I'm out elking. That leaves me walking with a pup tent, Dutch oven, and maybe a book of matches. Still wouldn't trade her for the world.

Well maybe I will draw something next year. I will have 18 points for deer, elk, and antelope.

Drive down to Highway 138. Go uphill to the 4000 ft elevation area. Hunt south to California border.

Drew a Cow tag and Fort Rock deer. I get to set up camp twice and hunt big game for 12 days then 9 days. Both areas have Bear and Cougar. Coyote and Grouse. Zero points will get a person tags. You just have to accept the low success rates and open your horizons. Last years Elk looked exactly like a 500lb Bear, Tastes like one also.

We hunted the road closure “triangle” between Hwy 97 and 58 for years. Killed a ton of bucks, mainly young forkies or threes, every so often a small 4x4. I love reading your posts about hunting a particular big mature buck. Be sure to post pics when you get him this year.

I saw one of the Big bucks I hunt. During Elk season 2017. He was getting Old. I plan on hunting his area this fall. First time I cut his tracks, 2011 I think. He was a giant. Almost snuck up on him that year, right at first light. Saw him going away in a jackpine thicket. Thought He was a Cow Elk at first. Amazing how far he go's for water. About 3 miles every few days.

I do ok in southern Oregon.
