Anyone ever tried 3031 in the 223....

My Remington ADL and VLS in 223, both seem to love a charge of 25.5 grains of 3031
with bullet weights from 40 to 55.... it really loves it with 53 grain V Maxes....

Was at the range this afternoon, trying out 7 different powders with max charges and the 53 V Max....
each did a great job of 10 shot groups...

but once again, the champion was 3031, with the 25.5 grain charge..
the 25 grain charge equals the other's groups...

27grains4895,
26.5 grs 4064,
25 grain AR Comp,
27 grain Varget,
25 gr H 322,
27 grains 4320...

10 shot groups...the first 5 shots of 3031, was a hole about half the size of a dime....
100 yds, Bushnell Engage scope 2.5 x 10, set on 10

Seafire, at one time 3031 was pretty popular in the .22-250 and .222.. No reason it should not be fine in the .223.. I fell into 11 pounds of the stuff some years ago for about $11/pound.. Bought all they had.. I have not tried it in my .223 due to the low vel. listed in the books.. That is the only reason.. Did you check the speed?????

I've been shooting 3031 in my 223's since Herters powders went off the market, 25gr under a 50gr bullet. It was pretty much a do all load coyotes, fox, beaver(control), ground squirrels and even target shooting. I wore the barrel out on that 223 . I still use it in a variety of cartridges, it is hard to fine a old time cartridge that doesn't have load data for 3031.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

With a 53 grain V Max, Hornady Manual # 10 lists the MV @ 3400 fps with a charge of 25.5 grains of 3031.

and the bullet has a higher BC than their 60 grain V Max...

I think that is pretty respectable for a 223 with that bullet weight.

I use 3031 in 223,22-250,and have a 308 that prefers it. Always great accuracy. There are better powders nowadays for more speed, but 3031 does what I need.

I had a 40X .222 once upon a time. I think it was against the law to use anything except 4198 and 52 grain Speer bullets. Quarter inch gun. A mentor gave up on anything larger than a Hornet and I ended up with 30 half cans of powder. I do remember the group it was .188 for five shots at 100 yards with 3031. The First 308 Winchester Pet loads by Ken Waters concluded that no powder was better than...3031 for 150 and 165 grain bullets (his recommendation for medium size North America game).
I like Benchmark and try it as often as I can, but, I am somewhat haunted by Orange cans of rifle powder.

I load the 50 gr. Nosler BT over 25.0 grains of IMR 3031 for my CZ 527. It's very accurate.

Probably because Benchmark is basically a short kerneled version of 3031 burning speed.

I have a 1969 IMR reloading guide, where 3031 is pretty well established in the 223 and 222 Magnum loads with 50 & 55 grain bullets, often filling the case before peak pressures are reached.
Benchmark allows that burning speed to fit in these cases.

I'd never consider a powder for the 223 that wasn't a ball powder just because of the sheer ease of loading ball... god damn 3031,4064 and like stick powders that feel like cutting Lincoln logs going thru the powder measure. MB

I used it back before everyone said it was an old powder.

Yes sometimes cutting powder is a pain but it works in almost everything.
