I'm trying to gauge how many points i should accumulate before applying for a tag.

How many points did it take for those who drew a tag? Resident or non? Unit?

Thanks in advance.

Well, you always have a chance at a random draw tag with 0 PP.
General license hunting for me this year and an additional cow tag on private land, glad to be on the resident side of the draw.
3 PP may get you a general tag in the future, all depends on point creep.

There's tons of info on this, without blabbing all over the www.....

I drew a non-resident bull tag with 3 points for an outfitter near Laramie.

Sorry Judman. Every search takes me to the WFG site to look up MY results. I'm just purchasing a point this year. This old dog hasn't perfected the art of google-fu yet. If there is an easy way to search, please pm me if you can. If people disclosing how many p points it took to draw violates some sort of etiquette... I apologize. This, will be my first, and probably only ever Elk hunt.

Sako76... Thank you! That gives me hope for the next year or 2.

I’m a resident so different rules. No preference point stuff for us, just a random draw for limited quota units and over the counter general tags. Pretty sweet!

For non-residents I think 2 preference points 5 years ago got you good odds. 1 preference point for the special tag was about the same. I think points have crept up and now it’s 3 for a sure thing.

If you draw a general tag I like the Bridger Teton National Forest units. But there are good opportunities all over the state with a general tag.

Just to clarify, my booking agent said most of his clients draw with 1 point and the special license (more $$). I had been building points for a pack in hunt in a wilderness area and I started to feel pretty crappy hunting at 6500' in Colorado and was wondering if I was suffering from altitude sickness. I bailed on the pack in hunt, I didn't want to be 6-8 hours horse ride away from getting to a hospital. I understand I could have drawn that tag with 2 points and a regular tag.

Thank you both. The unit and outfitter we're holding out for are up near Sheridan (we have our reasons). I've heard some people finally getting that area with 6+ points. I'll keep on it.

Beautiful area! If you find yourself near Dayton I recommend stopping at the Branding Iron Cafe and treating yourself to the ribeye steak and eggs. It's one of the best meals I've had (made especially good when you come out of the mountains)! v/r Joel
