D Day has been discussed on the 'Fire many times. But, it's been generally discussed in a rather antiseptic or historical way. This book gets down in much more detail to what the people on the ground went through. It is written from interviews conducted by the author's father in the 1950's with German survivors. You've maybe read about the one ME109 that was seen on D Day-- the pilot is interviewed. What it was like to be targeted when in a German MG hard point or other hardened site is described. Did you know the Germans had fuel-air 'bombs' prepared to destroy the invaders AND the Port of Calais and much of Calais? It was the Typhoon B. The Typhoon A had been used against a Russian bunker. It worked well. The Typhoon B was used against Russian troops, but not in combat. As is quoted in the book, "It was a test". And then, when questioned about it, "Let's move on".

There's a description of Allied captured paratroops having been tied with their hands behind them and executed. "That must be the work of the SS boys".

The fear brought on by the "Jabo" attacks-the ground attack fighter bombers- Thunderbolts and Typhoons (Fighters, not the German weapons).

Amazing book. Just amazing.
