Putting together a 6.5-06 and am thnking about putting a SWFA 10x on it. How do you guys like the 10x for shooting out to 600-700 yards? Gun is going to be used on a lot of coyote huntings and also up to elk. Do you feel underscoped at longer distances with the 10x?

I'm an old guy with chit eye sight and find a 10X just a little less than I want at that range on steel. I'm simply not practiced enough ( YET ) to shoot game at that range. I'm betting younger eyes will be fine with it, many are.

More X's mo betta for this old man

Laker - Am very pleased with the 6x SWFA scope a buddy prompted me to buy. Popped it onto my good ol' 308 Win, and use it often out to 600 yards or so. I was very impressed with the quality of the SWFA scope, particularly for the price.

That 10x you're considering should be even better for the 600 - 700 yard shooting you mentioned.

Regards, Guy

For Utility Killing,I much prefer the 6x,for distances well beyond the 700yd line.

I have a 6.5-06 Play Toy,that wears a 10x,but rides in a HEAVY filled A5 and S/S Matt bottom,etc. Straight Giggles Rifle and it's OK there.

Flipside...I built a 223 Sleeper/Loaner as a Mind Fhuqk,to let folks shoot. Faux 5,Heavy Varmint in 223 SALAMI,as a LR Hammer and it wears a 6x. I've had lotsa folks shoot THE schit out of it,farther than they'd ever shot anything before and of course connecting as they please. When they are done,I say "you know that's a 6-power?!?"...which ALWAYS fhuqks people up and of course sells a LOT of glass. One buddy was shooting it at the 1450yd line, blowing his own mind and I had to peel tape away,to SHOW him the designator.(grin)

10x will bite you sooner or later,on movers or in the brush and a 6x shines brightly on all of it,giving up nothing at distance. 'Course nobody listens and alotta 10x's get pulled off, after them lessons have been experienced in the flesh.

SWFA 10x is great at 800 yards.

BTW, that little guy in the photo is too tall for his hair. Probably complains about it in bagel shops.

Peckerpole Stick,

You TRY and FAIL to make up for your small size as a male with objects.

Little Bitty Guy that's too tall for his hair, too.

BTW, we all know you've never been in uniform other than as a maintenance guy or gas station attendant or you would be MUCH better at cussing.

You would really fit in Anchorage, Seattle, Portland and San Francisco.

Here is my take on using fixed power scopes. While they are great for target shooting at known distances, I am not a fan of them for hunting. Can they be used for hunting? Absolutely, however if using a fixed 6X and shot presents itself at greater than 400, it becomes much harder to pick out distant obstacles that could impact the shot, as well as making it harder to "hold on a spot" on the animal itself. If using a 10X or 12X, then invariably a shot will present itself at 20 yards through some brush and all you end up seeing in the scope is "brown". Again, it is very difficult to pick the right spot, quickly.

That is why I am a fan of variable power scopes for use in hunting situations, even when longer ranges are expected. A 3-10 or 3-12 is what I would be looking for in this situation.

Look, I realize that reading comprehension is not your strong suit, but how about you quit messing up people's threads and try offering some really world advice? You claim to have done it all, yet all of your "advice" tends to reek of bull-schit, so how about you let the OP decide whose input they want to listen to?

Laker, My 6.5-06 wears a SS 6x and I'd have no issues out to 700 yards despite chopping the barrel to 18" and suppressing it. Far more game is missed up close due to too much scope than game lost at long range due to too few x's. For $270 a pop on sale days, buy both and put the loser on a 223 or something. But if buying only 1, I'd go 6x.

The new 156 EOL and 147 ELD are both great options in the 6.5-06. Both perk nicely with RL26. Good luck.

I run a 10X SWFA on one of my main hunting rifles and it is just fine. It has a number of elk to its credit.

I know Scenar shooter on here also ran a fixed 10x (S&B) for years, and I believe he still does on a number of his guns.

In regards to your question about feeling underscoped at longer distances with a 10x;
Last year I shot my cow elk at a shade over 600 yards with my 20" 308 that is topped with a 2.5-10X NF.
10x is plenty.

I just set my kids 20" .308 Tikka up with an SWFA 6X MIL/MIL and in playing with it, it is a pretty stellar all around package too, but for a 6.5-06 I would got with the 10X.

Back to the original question, the 10x will do just fine, both near and far. I do not shoot as far as you are questioning, but have shot animals out past 400 yards with the 10x and it was fine. The only way to tell, for your needs, is to try one. I have shot deer up close with it, too. I also have the 6x and like them real well. My eyes prefer the higher magnification, though.

BD,
A lot of members early on were upset at family being brought into this Larry and ā€œinsert several members namesā€ feud.

Long ago ROEā€™ s were established by all involved, including Larry, that making comments and targeting family members were part of their war plan.

Iā€™ve posted this before and many members agreed that no family, spouse, dog or cat member should ever be used in any way other than for a compliment on the Fire...

With this exception: If all feuding members agree to make family a target and post with like targeting...This becomes the rules they have agreed to play by.

Does that mean those who choose to read their feud should like it? No. But itā€™s their fight. You canā€™t side with any one member because they all have done it to each other on a weekly basis for over a year.

Itā€™s easier to ignore the feud than becoming involved yourself. Your feelings are seen, noted and understood by many.

Carry On...šŸ˜Ž

I have terrible eyes, especially the right eye, and the 10X served me well at 629 yards with the 6.5-06. .

I built another 6.5-06, lighter weight, I hope to hunt with in 2019, this one with a Rem700 action and Bartlein barrel.

This one has a VX-6HS 2x12x42...... not that I need any more than 10X.

No one should talk that way about another person's family, nor post pics of someone else's family in that context. I'm not interested in going through endless other threads and comments; I see a picture, repeatedly posted, of good people I know and trash being said about them.

Justify it as you like, it's not cool by anyone and 'someone else started it' is weak. You don't have to care what I think but I'm saying it just the same. Maybe I've done it somewhere in the past myself...if so I would be regretful.

Facts are hard....

Larry is a POS.

He decided to bring family into this and he is reaping what he has sowed. It may upset some people and that is understandable, but there is only one way this will stop and that is if Larry decides he wants it to stop and behaves as such.

We all know how that is going to go so we could just skip the morality of this all and get on with it. Larry can continue his uber successful quest to be the coolest guy on the www and the rest of us will laugh our asses of at his plight.

Sling all the crap at each other you want. Cut on each other and laugh about it. Pulling family in, either side, and you're in competition to see who's the sorriest.....looks like the competition's tight as you're all in a fight to see who's the worst.

Thank you for the kind words, but I think I have you fooled. My friends never stop riding me about the low quality of my amatuer gunsmthing.

This week I added a volquartsen grip to a Ruger Mark II target pistol. It did not fit my hand, so I made it fit.

I run a 10X SWFA on one of my main hunting rifles and it is just fine. It has a number of elk to its credit.

I know Scenar shooter on here also ran a fixed 10x (S&B) for years, and I believe he still does on a number of his guns.

In regards to your question about feeling underscoped at longer distances with a 10x;

My two cents - under 100 yards, the 10x is a soda straw view for me, and I've got to be paying more attention when I put the scope between my eye and the intended target.

With 6x, its better for a close range view - a subjective evaluation - but I find that I have an easier time getting on target with the 6x than the 10x for woods hunting.

At distance - 200+, I'm not under powered with 6x, but the 10x is easier on the aging eyesight for me.

My problem is I want a 40X to sight in at 100y and a 2X to shoot a deer at 400y.

I'm going to add my $.02 worth in. I'll admit I only read 7 pages of this, I got pretty tired of the BS with only about one post per page that was actually about the subject.

Any fixed scope over 6x(and I'm being kind, wouldn't have a fixed six for hunting either other than stand hunting over a food plot or feeder) is fine for long distance if you are a great shot. If you can put the first cold bore shot from field positions in a desert plate sized target, if you can't there is a chance that you are going to have to get in close to put a kill shot in. A good 2-5-10 or 3-15 would be a much better choice in my book.

Learning to hunt so you don't have to take a 700 yard shot would be even better.

After the first shot the rest are just noise.

If you canā€™t shoot a 10x at everything from 10 yards to 1000 yards...... then you should open the other eye. Learning to run an optic (or sights) with both eyes open is a paramount shooting skill.... but also somewhat of a lost art. Good cheekweld helps here too... but thatā€™s also addressed very little anymore.

Seriously..... I ran a fixed 12x Leupold on a dedicated coyote rifle for about 10 years.... and killed 100ā€™s of dogs wig it.... many at powder-burn range.

Leupold used to make a 7.5x and an 8x... they were both great scopes.

Iā€™d love a fixed 8 as you described.... especially with the 6x style MQ in it.... or even a straight mil-dot.

If I went the fixed route S&B would be a must. the camera land exclusive is pretty nice.

Fred I know Pat (scenar) loves the 10x S&B and it must be tough to hold up to his abuse. Is that camera land special a 6X?
I just have a hard time wrapping my head around the $2500 price tag

Love frud.

I'm from the same area (Skagit for me, I think you're a little farther south?) and share your opinion of the standard 6x and 10x. Good tough scope, great reticle, but I sure don't love the glass, especially in the cloudy evenings when it's kinda damp and gloomy here on the wet side.

The standard classics may not have the brightest glass, but their resolution is extremely good, and the ability to handle adverse atmospheric conditions is phenomenal.

The 6x PMII is a fair bit less than $2500 if that's the one you were referring to(?). I think Fred linked to it. I've used one for a while now and REALLY like it...but I'm a fixed 6 junkie.....

Concerning the Schmidt & Bender 6x42 and 10x42 that are on Camera Land's website, I am assuming the "FFP" in the titles refer to First Focal Plane, but these are fixed power scopes.

Am I missing something?

No - youā€™re reading it as advertised, and they are fixed power.

S&B refers to these scopes as ā€œFirst Focal Planeā€ in their catalogs and in the scope book with the scope.

If the recticle is positioned in the scope ahead of the magnification, whether it moves or not, the scope would ā€œtechnicallyā€ be first focal plane, though most of us wouldnā€™t call it that.

My bad Jud, I was talking 6x. I was surprised to see the $1867 price as that's lower than they were initially going for.

I'm not sure if there is some pro/con on FFP in a fixed (or variable) power scope related to something besides reticle size......

IME the fixed 6 is brighter and clarity beats the 2 fixed 10s I've had. For a dedicated hunting rig I will take the 6 every time.

I have many of each model, and I would agree that the 6x is brighter, but the clarity in both is very, very good. I would also take the 6x for a dedicated hunting rig, and the 10x every time for target use or for a dedicated open-country rifle.

The 10s I had still have one I bought over 10 years ago. My fixed 6 is 3 years. I wonder if glass on the newer 10s is better than the older ones? I might have to try another 10. Could be my eyes or I picked the wrong run of 10s to buy from

I only have one 6x and one 10x, but would not consider the brightness or clarity of either one "very very good". They are perfectly fine in bright light, but in my experience are a step behind even a VX-2 in low light, like cloudy Northwest evenings. In that respect they are acceptable, but not excellent. Obviously these scopes have other things going for them, but IMO the glass is not their strong point.

I should add that my 1-4x was in the same ballpark, while the 3-9x HD is better but still not Leupold quality glass in low light (for my sample of 1).

ā€œGlassā€, is entirely overrated in riflescopes. Theyā€™re aiming devices.... not observation devices. The clarity and resolution needs to be good enough for steering bullets.... not counting gnat nuthairs. I think VX2 level glass is a good comparison to the Classic Fixed SS scopes.... and thatā€™s more than adequate for all my hunting needs. The HD series has excellent glass, and is noticeably better than the classics.

Iā€™ve been shooting 10x and 12x Super Snipers since LONG before they became popular here.... and long before the advent of the Mil-Quad reticle. Iā€™ve used them all over the West, including a lot of time in PNW rainforests.... and Iā€™ve never wanted/needed ā€œbetter glassā€.

While the brightness and contrast may not appear all that impressive, the resolution of the 6x and 10x, especially in poor atmospheric conditions, has outpaced plenty of scopes costing a lot more, even up to 10x more than the SS classics. IME/IMO the 6x and 10x have VX2-VX3 quality glass (but I would argue that they have better resolution than the Leups), while the 3-9xHD outpaces the VX3 of similar mag range.

Everyone's eyes are different, but that's my opinion and that of some of my shooting buds.

A couple of weekends ago I was talking with a younger fellow at the range. We were talking about scopes for different purposes. he said something about needing more magnification than he had to "really home in" on target. One of the rifles I was shooting that day had 6x SWFA on it. I set the parallax adjustment to 300 yards, and without telling him it was 6x I handed him the rifle and got him to focus the reticle to his eyes. Then I had him look at some stuff on the 300 yard target board. When I told him it was "only 6x" he was impressed.

The center of the center is the center. My buddy used to say he needed ā€œmore xā€™sā€ then complain about not being able to get the crosshairs to ā€œsettleā€, the being able to see his heartbeat in the scope.

In comparing the glass on my SS 6 to a leupold VX2 I thought the SS 6 had noticeably better resolution as well

We'll agree to disagree on that. Side by side comparisons of both don't show me what you're saying; I'm seeing the opposite, particularly in low light. I have excellent vision so that's not the issue.

I can live with that. Again, people's eyes are different. Perceived optical performance is a much more subjective topic than something like mechanical performance. But keep in mind that I'm basing my opinion off of many samples of 6x, 10x, and 3-9x SS scopes, and several VX2 2-7x, 3-9x, and a couple of VX3 2.5-8x scopes. I've used and compared them all in daylight, low light, heavy mirage, clear air, rain, fog, etc.

I have a lot of glaucoma damage to my eyes, especially my shooting eye, but to me comparing my IOR scopes to my Leupold scopes the IOR wins on resolution and the Leupold wins on color spotting.

The resolution of an IOR on 10X is the same to me as a Leupold at 12X.
The Leupold is better at finding a brown ground squirrel on brown dirt, by picking up on a few Golden stripes.

Kiwi Composite Carbon Fiber Stock With Recoil Pad Remington 700 LA JUN15...
Total: $518.00

I can see I drilled out the G10 pillars and made my own Aluminum pillars and epoxyed them in.

The other one, still in the wrapper with G10 like pillars, weighs 22 ounces.

If I google the info I do have, and poke around, it looks like New Zealand

That $1199 NZ looks like $885 US

That grip looks good I haven't seen any like it in mcmillan/manners/etc. ,, had a hand/arm injury couple of years ago and my right wrist isn't quite as flexible . That steeper grip would help me out .
