A while back I posted about about a 375 H&H I had acquired that had a 300 H&H shooter thrown in to make me more comfortable on the price.

He got the gun out of storage and sent me pics today.

He described it as a beatup shooter with a good bore.

It is by no means a collector, but I don't consider it quite a beater. I am certain it has plenty of stories it can tell.

It was made in 1949 and comes with a red field 3x9 scope.

It has the 300 Magnum barrel marking and a transition tang. It has a heavy stippled front sight ramp.

The one big issue with it is it has an extra hole in the front of the stock. But for basically being a throw in rifle I can't truly complain. I had thought about going the custom route with it but I might just clean it up.

Just me but I would leave it as is. Take it out in the field and hunt it. While sitting in a blind, let it whisper some of it's tales of hunts gone by. African plains game? a double of Mule Deer and Elk? One can only wonder of the sunrises and sunsets in scenic lands.

The recoil pad is not original to the gun and the hole in the rear bridge is likely not factory d&t.

It looks to me like the rear scope mount is positioned too far forward for a hole in the rear bridge to work. Does it have a side mounted scope?

No it's a basic redfield mount I believe.

Model70man: I have a BUNCH of N.I.B. Redfield one piece scope bases for "338 and 458 Winchester Magnum pre-64 Model 70 actions "above" serial number 66,xxx.
I wonder if these are the same base as is on the 300 H&H Rifle in question here - or did Redfield make a different version for the 300 H&H's - my mind fades a bit with age.

P.S.: Does anyone need a BUNCH of N.I.B. Redfield one piece bases for pre-64 Model 70's under serial number 66,xxx for 338 Winchester Magnums or 458 Winchester Magnums?

I wouldn't make any decisions about what to do with that rifle until I determined how accurate it is in its current state.

Edit to add: It might take a different scope to determine the accuracy.

JR -70 model 54 and preWar 70 standard cartridges #511111
JR-70A Model 70 above 66,xxx standard calibers #511112 as well as 338, 458
JR-70AH Model 70 H&H above 700,000 #511113
JR-70A Magnum model 70 H&H above 66,350 #511114
JR-70 Magnum model 70 H&H below 66,350 #511115

There is a Target model base as well, I think or it may be the same as the H&H???

ETA: Since this is a transition model H&H it may have zero, one or two holes in the rear bridge from the factory. Also it may have been a zero hole model and drilled for the right or wrong base after the fact. It kind of looks like the hole is a little forward for an H&H; perhaps not? Perhaps they drilled it for a JR70-A?
