Guess I could have done a search... they did disband the team in favor of a crosscountry team. Title IX advocates should go nuts at the team is mostly women and they have routinely been so.

UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA-RENO DISBANDING THEIR HISTORIC NCAA RIFLE TEAM
12/24/18 6:30 AM | by Chris Eger

Although it has won more NCAA titles than any other athletic program at the school, the Wolf Pack is set to hang up their rifles at the end of the season. (Photos: University of Nevada – Wolf Pack Rifle Team)

One of the most successful Division I rifle programs in the country will be no more after next Fall. The University of Nevada’s athletics department announced last week that they will end the Wolf Pack Rifle Team at the conclusion of the 2018-19 season, replacing it with a cross-country team.

University President Marc Johnson said the moves “best represent Wolf Pack athletics in the current intercollegiate athletics landscape and our future within the NCAA and the Mountain West Conference,” stressing the school will continue to fully support the rifle program through the current season.

The public research university said that, while the rifle team has had a string of successes in its existence, it has found it hard in recent years to continue as the pool of competitors has shrunk, with just 30 Division I programs nationwide— about a quarter of which are military academies — currently sponsoring the sport including only three schools west of the Rockies. However, as pointed out by The Maven, the Wolf Pack Rifle Team has won more NCAA championships than any other sport at the university.

“These are not easy decisions, and we’ve gone to great lengths to examine, identify and chart the best course of action for Nevada athletics,” said athletics director Doug Knuth.

The school’s 1926 female rifle team. The team’s current makeup is strong with female student-athletes.

Colby Sakumoto, the team’s manager, stressed that the move could leave student-athletes cut short as, with a limited number of schools available with a similar program to choose from, the likelihood of finding open spots are slim. “For many of these athletes, UNR’s rifle program was one of their only options to compete in the sport while being able to attend a major university in relatively close proximity to their families in the west and northwest parts of the country,” he said.

Founded in the 1900s, the team has for much of that time included female athletes and, as noted by the program, the majority of the current team are women.

The National Rifle Association said that the decision by the university to can the program, “offers more evidence that campuses are full of anti-gun sentiment.”

Coincidentally, I just got word too that UNR Rifle is no more. During the time I was coaching juniors we probably sent a half dozen shooters to UNR including a National Champion and National Team member and 7 time All-american. Fred Harvey runs a high quality program and took good care of our shooters. I'd spoken with him as recently as a couple of years ago with my reentry into coaching and found he was still doing great things and prioritizing bringing in good kids, scholars and shooters (probably in that order).
My friend who I coached with relocated to Reno and gave his read on the subject. Nevada is increasingly Blue and this is just one of the ways this color change is manifesting. They replaced a team heavy with women with Men's Cross Country (giving the finger to Title IX). Another coach says the administration refused 5th year tuition for one of our local shooters who completed her 4 years of eligibility, but not her redshirt year. College athletes generally get 5 years to play 4. Chicken [bleep]!

I guess there's no replay of the West Virginia situation where the state and legislators pushed back when their beloved (and hugely successful) Mountaineer Rifle Team was disbanded.

Fuggin Kalipornia transplants have changed a once great and free State into a wart on Kalipornia's ass, that's why.

They are a blight, spreading all over the west.

Really, I get real tired of reading this sort of crap! When you condemn my state be real careful not to trash the thousands of us out here who struggle against the laws and attitudes of folks like you. And, by the way, there are a number of other states who seem to have taken the leading edge in this issue so keep with the times. And, by the way again, I'm sure Reno made the unfortunate decision all on its own without a lick of help from anyone west of the Sierras. I don't come to this forum to read crap like this.

Sad. One of our local sharp-eyed ladies scored 5 years of free schooling with their team. As a freshman word was she might really get aboard in her junior or senior years. About 4 months later, she was in with the bid dogs. Came really close to doing the Olympics in air-rile and small bore.

This makes me sad. I shot all four years in college. After I graduated my university canceled rifle team and added football. The athletic department still contacts me and wants me to donate but they fail to recognize they canceled my sport

Fine...

Put me on ignore, and stay on your side of the hill. You obviously get tired of hearing the truth. Nobody but other transplants like the blight.

I have to live here and watch it happen...for now.

Yet a couple of months ago Time Magazine had a four page article that said collegiate and high school trap shooting was growing very rapidly. I forget the numbers but the growth rate was huge. Perhaps one factor is that shooting clay birds is a lot more fun than shooting at fixed targets.

Don't blame me. I voted for Trump.

Democrats would burn this country to the ground, if they could rule over the ashes.
