Has anybody here had a dog diagnosed with Cushings Disease and used Vetroyl for the treatment? Our dog was recently diagnosed with this and the vet recommended Vetroyl but after my wife and I did some research we found that this drug can cause some serious side effects. If any of you used Vetroyl what was the result? Fortunately our dog is not showing any serious symptoms yet and we are considering using Meltonin which has gotten some good reviews for treating this problem but without serious side effects. I would appreciate any advice. Thank you.

no idea about the meds, but I hope your dog does well !
if a man speaks, and there isn't a woman around to hear him, is he still wrong?

Wife lost her Cocker Spaniel to Cushings Disease about a year ago. We had her on meds for it but don't recall what - want to say it was a steroid of some type.

I would imagine your DVM told you that this is pituitary based and explained the differences in Cushng's treatment are based on the origin of the Cuching's. That being true then Vetoryl is as good a place to start as any.

I had a schnauzer that had Cushings disease. It was maybe 10-12 years ago and I don't really remember what they did as far as what meds but a few months into treating the Cushings disease the treatment for that caused Addisons disease which I guess can happen.
From what I remember the vet actually thought treating the Addisons would be easier long term, had to do in injection about every 30 days with some med and also give other meds daily. It worked pretty well for a few years then it was tough balancing everything. If you have a good vet though that knows how to treat the disease your dog should be OK. Just have to really watch them.

Serious side effects with Vetroyl? Same with chemotherapy and radiation therapy for cancer patients. Serious side affects are very often associated with a potential cure.

I has a shih tzu that had Cushings that was treated with Vetroyl, she had no problems adjusting to it. She had to go in for blood work every now and then to make sure she was ok on it but other than that there was no problems.

Our beagle had cushings and we started treating her for it but she had cancer at the same time and we ended up having to say goodbye this May so I don't know how the long term cushings would have played out.
But depending on what the cause of the cushings is...miles58 sounds pretty spot on from what our vet said.
