I have two 7x57 rifles that I reload for and have been searching for some 175 grain round nose. As any 7mm caliber rifle shooters who happen to reload will know; the 7mm round nose bullets are no longer being made by Sierra, Hornady, Remington, or any of the other major bullet makers.

I particularly like the 175 gain Round nose for my 7x57s as a deer hunting round. They have always put down game with authority and with not much meat damage. So I was thrilled when I went into a local gun shop that specializes in "muzzle loaders" and happened on to a old box of Remington 175 grain round nose ammunition. I paid $20.00 for the box of 20 and felt lucky to have them.

Now what? Use them, hoard them, or just save them for posterity?

Check Gunbroker. They show up on there from time to time. I found several boxes of Hornady for a buddy awhile back. If you want loaded ammo, Federal still loads the 175 RN.

Another good bullet that has been long gone is the Sierra 170 gr. round nose. Not quite as tough as the Hornady's but a good bullet in the 7x57. I've actually found a few boxes of the Sierras scrounging through little gun shops, gun shows and even on gun/reloading related sites. About 5 or 6 years ago I asked Sierra if they's ever bring that 170 gr. RN back and while they said they would if there was enough demand, the odds were slim and none. Round nose bullets just don't sell in large enough quantities to make company bean counters happy. I looked through of 7MM bullets about a year ago wanting to work up a load with the Hornady. I had three boxes and all were the spire points. DAMN! I did the test with the Sierras which worked just fine. I may give them a try on a hunt I have planned for later this year.
As far as 175 gr. ammo goes, I think Federal still loads that weight for the 7x57. Any well equipped gun shop should have some and you can order them on line. I'd suggest running a few over a chronograph as the ones I tested were much slower than advertised. They were all I could find back in 1973 and cost me a nice eating sized Mule Deer. I never could figure out why until years later when I got another rifle in 7x57 and a chronograph. They were what was left over from that hunt and ran about 200 FPS slower than advertised. Tests from a couple of new boxes weren't much better. Another different rifle. I'm thinking that if I wanted to use that bullet, I'd pull the bullets and use the brass to work up a decent load. Kind of a pricey way to do things but sometimes you got to do what you got to do. I sectioned on of the bullets and they have a fairly stout jacket. Combined with the slow speed and thick jacket I'm thinking that bullet didn't open up all that well. What little blood trail there was petered out within a short distance. FWIW, My wife and I searched for that deer which I shot at about 8 in the morning until it was too dark to see anything. I found what the coyotes left the next morning.

It is also possible to use spire point 175 grains...and Hornady still makes them...amongst others....

I scrounged around for some about 5yrs ago and all I could find was 400pcs of Hornadys. Been saving them for my current 7x57 and another in the works.

I don't see any 175gr RN at Midway, but those Remington Core-Lokts are sure cheap.

Filter by “ammunition” and “caliber.” The Federals we’re in thee for $33/box. Which is about average.

The core locts are decent at targets for me. I’ve never shot a critter with them.

Prolly have 100 or so Hornady's left between what's loaded and still in the bench. The shoot well enough in my #1, and will leave a coffee cup sized hole through a pig. No more than that rifle gets hunted, what I have left will last me a long time.
I figured on just switching it over to regular 175 Interlocks when I ran out, but the Hawk option is pretty intriguing.
FWIW, 49 grains of RL22 and a 210 gives 2,500 out of my #1A with 1-1/2" groups, which is as good as that rifle groups anything (need to bed the forend, someday).

I think Prvi Partizan still makes a 173 gn SPRN as a component. I've tried them in factory ammunition and they seem a decent deer bullet, though I prefer their 139 gn PSP, or a handloaded 150 gn Winchester PP for deer.

Searched for 175 gr 7mm Mauser on AmmoSeek. Got Federal PWRSHK 7MMMAU 175GR SPRN 20rds $24.59 and up all over the place.

Thanks for all the suggestions and feedback. I plan to shoot these factory loaded round nose ammunition up, save the cases and reload with either 160 or perhaps 175 grain Nosler Partitions. I know I can get a little better performance out my reloaded 175 grain reloads than the Federal ammo175 grains are advertised at currently. As of late I am leaning toward the 160 grain Nosler as my primary "go to" bullet for deer/elk hunting. Again thanks for the suggestions and feedback!
