Just acquired my first Encore, a 45-70 with a muzzle brake. I have never cared for brakes, so I took it off. I was planning to install a thread protector but found that the thread on the barrel is 5/8 X 18....

Have checked most everywhere with no luck. They all are 5/8 X 24.

Any ideas where I might find one before I just whack the barrel off and re-crown it?

Mebbe get in touch with T/C? Bullberry might help.

Try Hughes Precision and see if they have any adapters.

T/C said they don't have anything. So did a couple of other T/C sources. I didn't think of Bulberry so may take a shot with them. Can't help but wonder why T/C would use a different thread pattern and then not support it.

Already has a bunch of tape on it. Looks like I'm heading toward a cut and crown....

Well I'll be darned….I was sure that I checked Brownell's entire listing of thread protectors. Don't know how I missed this one. Thanks 45-70fan!

Good choice, Hook. A muzzle brake is useless on such a low pressure round. I reckon you knew that.

With the Ruger 5/8"X18 thread protector from Brownells:

Not as smooth as a clean barrel, but much better than having that fish basket hanging on the end. Thanks again for the link!
