Old Bud called awhile back, i'll be muzzle loader hunting white tails up at his place in Kansas this year, shot a hell of a big 9pt up there last year with my bow, he was 22 wide and 24 tall, will be out at first light in the morning putting my old 58 cal Mike Adcock replica of an S Hawken rifle through it's paces, it boots a 58 cal round ball out at 1988 fps using 140gr FFG with extreme accuracy.

Cant wait to get started, rifle, bag and binos are leaned against the back door jamb.

There’s nothing like the smell of Real Black Powder burning when you touch that trigger!

You bet Buddy, I get double nostril hits of that all year long firing my Sharps rifles, this 58 belched out a 140gr smoke cloud at that big buck last time I mz hunted up there, when the smoke all drifted back over my face, there he lay stone dead 44 yards away, I hit him on the point of his right shoulder, the ball exited low offside ribcage, I haven't seen a bigger blood mat under an animal when I turned him over, those big round balls are deadly sombitches.

I still cant believe that ball exited a 260 lb buck deer smashing a shoulder going in at such high velocity. crazy

I have a T/C Big Boar 58, it's got the prettiest stick of walnut i've ever seen on a T/C, accurate sombitch with patched round ball and 90 grains FFG.

I’d love to have one of those to go with my T/C Hawken .54
Mines a accurate sob too.

It's pretty tough to stop those bigger round balls.

I shoot a 600 ball in my 62 rifle, and it's a freight train. I haven't stopped one in water jugs, but I tried. They keep slipping out the sides at 5 jugs.

Scotty, if you want a sidelock with a big hole in the barrel, we can make that happen.

LOL, you bet Sharpsman, he was quartering a bit to me at 44 yards, that ball exited mid offside ribcage, he dropped, I hope you get on a big one up there this year too, good luck. smile

Dang, I've never tried to put round balls through the water jugs, I bet they blow the holy hell out of the first two or three they hit, I'm two for two drt's with this 58 cal rifle so far, cant get over how quick it kills.

That does sounds like a fun "to do". I haven't ever tried a round ball into jugs myself.

I need to try again with two flanking columns of jugs.

The plastic seems to steer the ball off course when it gets slowed some.

I’m pretty sure it’d go into Jug 6, but I have no idea if it’ll come out or not.

My rifle has a 46” barrel and I shoot 120gr 2F. They’re truckin’...and a 600 diameter ball is 324gr.

I had a TC Big Boar. Mine had problems. It would fire 3 shots well, 4th shot would hang, 5th shot would misfire reliably. I was swabbing between shots. No issues if I gave it a shot of CO2 from the "silent" discharger between shots but I didn't always want to lug that around with me. It wasn't extremely accurate, but it was adequately accurate with either PRB or 555 grain conicals. Eventually I sold it to a friend for his kid who just HAD to have one and offered me too much money ... enough to replace it with a TC Renegade .58 from their custom shop. It was QLA and never shot for sh*t. Swapped that for a .50 Renegade with QLA and had the same luck. Guess I don't learn fast. Wish I had another TC .58 but mine are gone and these days I'm ramping up to shoot a .54 GPR flintlock instead.

Once upon a time I looked at a .62.....ONCE! Then I started comparing the cost of roundball to .58....which I can order by the box (swaged) from Hornady in a box of .50 and THAT beat the whey out of the .62! I cast bullets for most of my life...since 1948 and I made an oath to myself that I will not cast another....as long as I can buy them! For some reason my back at 80 just ain't quite what it was at 50 when I could sit and cast all day!

I’m spoiled in that regard. I have a lot of lead and don’t mind casting, but Dixon’s Muzzleloading Shop is 15 minutes’ drive from my home. He has about anything I’d ever need on the shelf.

I bought this TC Big Boar a few years ago. This is the first deer taken with it. PRB & 100gn powder. Went through the shoulder blade just high enough to clip the bottom of the spine. Was under the hide on the far side. Used same gun & load a week later on a doe at about 35-40 yds. ball went low through the shoulder hitting the heart, lungs and the edge of the liver before exiting. She didn't go to far.

The Big Boar is my favorite ML.

Just shot a few .570 balls with 80 grains of swiss. Shooting quite well. Hope it don't bounce off stuff this fall.

Stoke it up to 100 grains! It’ll shoot better!

140 will make it move out!!

Liebchen, my .62 Jäger is adequate for most any critter I might go after. If I so decide. Hmmm, not hitting the elk killing fields this season. Perhaps a nice cow nilgai may present herself. If I have the opportunity to go!

Oh I kind of enjoy shooting it with 80 and it’s quite accurate. I’ll just roll the dice. My elk hunting usually consists of long quiet walks lol.

Nice rifles, shooting and stories Men, time IS drawing near, BTW, I've lied my butt off about my 58 cal round ball load, have said for years here it went 1988 fps, was back in my load book the other day, in fact 140grs KIK FFG under a PRB runs 1788 fps, I need to work on my writing!

No worries Gunner. Plugged 1788 into the roundball ballistics calculator and looks like at 100 yards you are around 1100 fps. Its a relatively short range game and accuracy trumps all is my feeling. Looks like my load is down around 1000 fps at 100 yards give or take. Should be fine in either case. Here is to punched tags soon.

Prefer my 58 to any others I have. And there are a few. It's a Hawken. Have a partially put together fullstock Hawken 58 out in the shop I need to get back to. Might not touch another after I finish it.

I like my .58...(it prefers 100grs FF)
[Linked Image]

Built by Rodney T. Shields between 1995-1999. It has a 1:72 twist, Bob Roller handmade triggers, Ron Long Lock and a 32" Getz tapered octagon barrel. All hardware is browned iron. The length of pull is fourteen and a quarter inches and weighs 9.6 lbs. Mr. Shields went to the Mountain Man museum in Pinedale Wyoming and took detailed measurements of one of the Hawkens on display and duplicated the rifle with better wood and in a more common bore diameter (I think he told me the original had an odd bore size, but I forgot to put it in my notes).

There are some very nice rifles posted on here!

Thanks to all posters. I do like seeing them!

PDS, 30338, I took possession of a nice 20 bore Northwest gun this week. It could use some trigger/lock work. When I get some of these Dr. appts behind me, and get wifey settled back in here at the house I’m gonna tackle into it.

I'm taking the modern path to .58 caliber. Have a PH 1858 Enfield on the way. Been looking at these for a while, along with the Musketoons. Finally jumped.

We have a four-day sidelock/stickbow season in January. Any deer or bear (like they'll be awake!) as long as you don't exceed your
3-buck season limit. No extra tags or fees. Only got one day in last season, but there was snow on the ground. Had a good time crunching along wth my Renegade. Nary another soul to be seen.

Good stuff Men, I placed cardboard shipping boxes out at 25, 50, 75, 100 and 125 yards last week and had at them with my 58 getting ready for the Kansas deer hunt sometime next month, I have my sight filed so the ball lands right on top of where the front sight is pointed, of course all shots were slightly high, except the 125 yard shot, it was near dead on and a bit to the right, I shoot a harder alloyed ball, somewhere between 20 and 30 to 1, I may have to go in at a last rib, I need the penetration, 140 grains has a pretty dang flat trajectory out to 125, the old 58 cal smoke belcher is ready, all that's left is to find some hair to put in front of it. smile

I like the looks of those Northwest guns, just don't like to shoot them. They don't fit me and I pay for it on my cheek bone. Hope everything settles down for you soon. Post some pics of that trade gun.

Hope so! Appears to be unfired.

I watched that puppy on GB for a couple days before I couldn't stand the suspense any longer and paid the Buy Now price, a couple or three hundred under the market, based on others for sale, and even a couple hundred under the Eyetalian ones.

Now I need to find a nice PH Musketoon to keep it company (better find the money first!).

Hope you crush a good one Gunner! I’d like to get in on this 58 cal action....

Hell, 30338 has me using Scenars from the 300 RUM this year, feeling a little crazy, but I figure if he trusts them and shoots a big ol ball he knows what works! grin

PM sent. 😉

I like the looks of those Northwest guns, just don't like to shoot them. They don't fit me and I pay for it on my cheek bone. Hope everything settles down for you soon. Post some pics of that trade gun.

New Northwest Trade gun. Approx. 20 bore.

You are irredeemable, it seems. Must be the effects of all that sulpher-laden smoke.

Very nice, as usual.

Hope you crush a good one Gunner! I’d like to get in on this 58 cal action....

Hell, 30338 has me using Scenars from the 300 RUM this year, feeling a little crazy, but I figure if he trusts them and shoots a big ol ball he knows what works! grin

If he's in there, i'll find him Big B, you can count on that, and yes, you need a 58, nothing like it, lol on 30338, he wont steer you wrong.

Nice rifles Pappy and KW, congrats Men and happy shooting and hunting! smile

Damn! All this 58 caliber talk got me interested. Took a look around and they're scarce as hen's teeth? Most are Civil War replicas.

Try to find a lefty lol. Once I saw pics of my current one, my checkbook opened pretty fast. Pretty easy to rebore a 50 or 54 into one.

Thanks PDS!!! No sir. Last turkey I ever shot was with another NW gun I had years ago that I gave to young son. I am not much of a turkey hunter. Just don’t really care to hunt em. But I do like fusils and smoothrifles.
This is smoothie #4 in my collection.

Let er rip Pappy, and please keep us posted on your findings.

Grab one Biebs, you'll have a blast in more ways than one, the 58 cal round ball is one of the fastest killers of deer I've ever seen.

Damnit you guys! You made me haul out my only .58......... actually .577. Original Pattern 53 dated 1857. Have shot it some with 68 gr. FF under a Mini' and she still lays 'em in there! Early doe season is a couple weekends away, maybe I'll see if it'll still send a "Yankee" to the promise land. (my freezer)

Awesome piece.

My PH, as expected shot pretty high, so I'm going to have to cobble up a higher front sight for field use. Have a plan, and what I need is on the way. It's only a replica, but I want to preserve its original state so will use epoxy to fit a higher blade over the original. No rush, the Mountaineer Heritage season isn't until January, although if I make meat with something else early on, I might get it out sooner.

Got quite a backlog of unblooded rifles at present.

Hey, I ain’t gotta dog in this hunt, but just saw this posted today on Log Cabins webpage. The Kindigs are good folks to do business with. They have been in the business over 80 years. Just throwing it out if someone is interested.

I picked up a nice TC big Boar back in the spring. Found a take off renegade stock with set triggers and put the barrel in it. It shoots really well with PRB and 100gr of Black MZ. Ive got a primitive mountain deer hunt/bear scout trip coming up the first week of oct and hopefully I can let it breathe fire. Keep an eye out for a bigboar , they are very nice. Hard to beat the old TC sidelocks.

That sounds nice. never cared for the original BB stock, though goodness knows the recoil pad is probably welcome.

A guy I worked with in the 90s had one, and had a stroke not long after he started shooting it. A coincidence? Perhaps. He stoked it to the max, and shot the big Maxis.

You guys are making me sick. Yep! You've caused an instant relapse of my chronic case of Fifty-Eight Fever. I acquired my third 58 (pictures below) over a year ago and haven't even shot it yet (too many guns/too little time). The guy I bought it from had it built is 1976 but could not remember the builder's name.

Nice light colored .58 Semisane! Ya gotta get out and shoot'er though. I'm pretty sure it's a misdemeanor to own a .58 in Louisiana and not shoot it at least annually.

Semisane,

Nice old rifle. Looks to me like it might have started life out as an old Sharon "Trade Rifle" kit!!! With some custom additions/work! A great catch! I bet it shoots plumb!!!!

Lets hear how she shoots!!!

I better throw my .58 in here. Some of you fellas might know more about this Gun than i do, i am just going off of what i have Read about it.

I bought this .58 Cal Rifle about a year ago New Unfired. Navy Arms Hawken Hunter, 3 Groove. From what I have read this was somewhat of a Pet Project of Navy Arms owner Val Forgett back in the Day, They Proofed the Hawken Hunter with 200 Grains of 3F Powder and a 610 Grain Minie, Val settled on 180 Grains of 3F, And a Thick Skirted 610 Grain Minie called a “Stake Buster” There is an Article in one of the Lyman Handbooks on this Rifle in Africa, They killed about everything BIG there with it 👍 Everything about this Rifle is Built HELL for Stout! 1-1/8” across the Flats, Solid Stainless Ramrod, Solid Brass under Rib.

If you look around, you may be able to find the article written about those thumpers by Maj. George C. Nonte, one of the guys that worked on the concept. They modified minie molds to get thicker skirts for the really heavy charges they used. Took 'em to Africa and slew a bunch of big beasties.

I'm thinking it was in a Gun Digest in the mid-sixties.

May have been more than one, or one or the other was a reprint, common in gun lit. The reason I think that is I don't recall ever seeing the Lyman book, but used to read GD pretty often.

Ordered some old books this morning on Amazon, including one of the Lyman manuals.

Congrats on the new rifles men, well done, I shot my 58 again the other day, freshly oiled another strip of ticking patch material, filled the horn with FFG KIK, filled the capper with new hot CCI mag caps. cleaned and reloaded for the hunt coming up, you know, there's critters out there right now going about their daily business completely unaware they have upcoming non cancelling appointments with several Big 58's! smile

Level those sights, and lets get it done!

Okay 58 fans, what's the hot barrel twist for PRBs in that caliber? Dr. Sam says larger bore sizes need less spin.

Thinking about sending my Renegade off for a rebore.

Heck if I know what twist this one is. Finally drew blood this morning by the house. Plantars fasciitis in my foot has had me sidelined for elk and bear. Had a close call with a high country buck. Beats a sunset pic I reckon. Anyway, my first blood with Lloyd and a 58 roundball. Spot and stalk doe.

Thanks, guys, that's about what I was thinking. Somewhere I read that original Hawkens were usually 1-48" (though the Ithaca " exact" replicas were 1-66 IIRC). Always wondered if the shallow depth of the rifling in guns like TCs was more of an issue for PRBs than the faster 1-48 twist.

The rebore idea is just a notion for now. Always like to have something rattling around upstairs for the future after current projects get completed.

Ouch! I went through that some years back. Wearing shoes indoors instead of stocking feet and replacing my shoes before the insides went flat took care of mine. Sore feet and back pain make everything else harder. Hope yours gets better.

My 58 Hawken has a 35 inch barrel 1 1/16 across the flats with a 1-72 twist. It shoots a patched round ball extremely well, routinely shooting one hole at 50 yards. I have taken a pile of deer, a bunch of hogs, and a black bear with the rifle in the 35 years that I have hunted with it. I have never seen another caliber rifle of any kind that puts deer on the ground as quick as a 58 with a patched round ball. It is a HAMMER, I tell you.

Yes, great job 30338, and as was said, I bet she didn't go far if anywhere after catching a 58.

I wanna know more about Lloyd. That is a fine looking rifle, and appears to be left handed.

Sharps, Had some help from Kaywoodie finding that one. It was built by John Bergmann and final finish work was done by its first owner. The barrel was an old GRRW barrel built by Lloyd Helms. Its 33.25" long and 1" across the flats. LOP is 14" and it has a long hawken lock and trigger guard. Has some case color hardening and a nice brown finish on barrel. Funny as so far the silver blade and iron sights are completely unadjusted by me and it hits dead on for me at 100 yds with my load. 58 cal of course.

Its not easy finding good lefty stuff, so once I located this one I had to have it.

Thanks for the update. I knew from looking at the picture that whoever built the rifle knew what he was doing and had an eye for a Hawken. I'm a lefty, and my 58 was built by Harold Ikerd. It has proven to be arguably the best rifle I have ever owned. It has certainly taken more game than any other rifle I have. I have a 58 and a 62 Hawken--both lefties--and have been surprised to discover that the 58 works better than the 62, in my experience.

Lloyd is a top shelf rifle. Congratulations on owning it.

Thanks CHLI and beretzs, it was a hell of a day, instead of mothers and fawns, I saw monster doe deer, the kind that only stand for big bucks, these girls were long, tall and healthy, I don't need the meat so let em walk, maybe they'll have old hammer head hanging around in a few weeks.

The swirling winds had me moving more than hunting, I'm the retarded type that wont take an old muzzleloader OR Sharps rifle up a tree into a stand, I love to hunt those old rifles from the ground, I'd get the wind and find a good spot, get set to hunt then have the wind hit me in the back of the head crazy, it warmed up too much by 1 o'clock, I gave up and went to the house, i'll be back! wink

Everytime I used to muzzleloader elk hunt, the wind would do that to me. Worked often enough to keep me interested. Hunting whitetails from the ground is a great time. Good luck on the upcoming buck tags.

You bet 30338, just something about doing it all on the ground with these old style, and in some cases very old rifles, don't get me wrong, I have ran a climber 25 feet up a tree with a camo stocked stainless inline with a scope sick grin, still fun hunting, just mighty different.

Many Thanks for posting the pics KW, and thank you too CHLI.

This buck came about in a funny way, the old Gent you see holding the buck in the second pic is the same one I've spent the last two days between rain storms working on getting his guns cleaned, oiled, zeroed, sighted in and ready to go, a Ruger semi auto 22 pistol, Ruger 9mm pistol and his inline muzzle loader, the pistols were dry and dirty, found three bad mags in what must have been over a dozen, I asked if I could have or buy his bad mags, he ask why, I said so I can bust em with that short shop hammer there and throw em in the trash so YOU or no one else will get killed trying to use them, he laughed and said get to busting! I DID! grin

Caught a break in the rain at 9:30 yesterday morning, I called him and said get your muzzle loader over here so we can get you zeroed, he's 81 years old and only shoots two 50 grain 777 pellets, he had some sabots, I gave him a box of 45 cal 250gr XTP's, went to my bench and got him zeroed at 100 yards, went back to the house, ran a cleaning patch through his bore followed by a couple dry ones, dropped in two pellets and sent a saboted XTP home for him, found a couple 50 cal speed loaders, loaded them up too.

As he was wiping his rifle off, he said, it's going to be misting rain in the morning with a nice N/NW wind, why don't you come and take a walk through the oaks behind my house, the acorns are dropping and the bucks are getting the girls on their minds, I shook his hand and said ill be there at 6:10 am, I was working my way North through a flat in the oaks headed up the mountain, this crazy buck came off the mountain with the wind dead in his back throwing his nose in the air with every other step, I threw the 58 up, braced off the side of an oak tree. hit the set trigger and whistled for all I was worth, he locked em up and stared straight at me as the 58 boomed, he was lost in the smoke, as they say, when the smoke cleared I saw the white belly hair.

I hit him on the point of his right shoulder, that ball either knocked him a 180, or he turned to run but couldn't, the first pic is exactly how he was laying when I walked up to him, funny how things turn out sometime. smile

Thanks Men, I told the old Gent this morning, "Hey Buddy, I gave you a damn 30 dollar box of bullets, you gave me a gate key and a big buck deer, I think you got ripped off" "No I didn't son" he said, as I saw his eyes misting up, it was just a dang cool day I was more than proud to be a part of. smile

Gunner's just got another one. He just sent me pics of a good eight point with two broken off from fighting that he walked up on in the fog. Shot through the shoulder at 35 yards. Deer jumped straight up, hit the ground and never moved. Lungs were mush. Still winning with the 58!

Thanks for all the well wishes men, you guys need to get [buy one], or get those 58's out in the field and get in on some of this fun i've been having.

It was a very foggy with misting rain Sunday morning when I headed into the wind out in the clearcut, I had probably worked about 400 yards of the cut when I caught movement in the fog roughly 35 yards away, I could see white horns, I raised the rifle and waited, when the buck cleared the sawbriar patch I fired, in the smoke and fog I saw that thing leave the ground looking like some sort of circus prancing horse, he then fell dead, never saw a reaction to a hit like that.

He was a young main frame 8 about 15 inches wide with his eye guards broke off I guess from scrapping with skinny racked bucks, I am mighty proud to have him, he'll eat good and is going to another old man and wife I know locally, and speaking of sawbriars, they did not disappoint, my legs look like i.ve been standing in a 55 gallon drum sorting wildcats, DAMN, but it was worth every scratch.smile

Sharpsman, dang right, hope you get up to Kansas and bust a bruiser, i'm going back in December after having struck out my first trip in September, if I see that big heavy 8 again i'll bust him, 2nd or 3rd week of December up in Kansas will have us chilled through the bone. grin

He's on a roll with that Hawken. If he is not careful, he won't have any tags left for the Sharps when the regular gun season opens. He's finding out that the 58 Hawken is THE deer killer, and swats them right and proper with a patched round ball. You shoot, they go right down , and don't get up. Congratulations again.

LOL, Sharpsguy knows the particulars of my 58 better than me, it was purpose built for a 140 grain charge of black powder, shoots straight to the sights.

And Thanks again for posting the pic KW, I appreciate it, this buck came along side me as I was working my way back down the mountain into a South wind, I had went up to look for that black bear, I whistle stopped this buck at 22 yards and shot him in the lungs instead of the shoulder on purpose, he still dropped ; ] he broke off one tine thrashing about, i'll go back up in better light and find it.

Thanks Sharpsguy, and you're exactly right, on both counts, I need to whoa up a bit.

Yeah, but the heck of it is, 70 grains of 2f and a patched round ball puts the big hurt on them inside of 100 yards with NO recoil. You just can't reach them as far with the light load, but it kills them just as dead.

So true Sharpsguy! 70 of FFFG. Is generally my magical load in all my .50’s. Heck I have even been known, on occasions , to shoot it in .54’s and .62’s. In my fusils, all 20 bore, it works well with shot and ball and has accounted for numerous pigs and deer. I can’t see well past 100, wait reality check, past 70 yards to honestly make an ethical shot. So 70, or even 75, works well for me.

The last pig I shot was like 15 yards from me. 😁

I’ve taken several deer and numerous pigs with a single .395 RB and 50 grains of FFFG! wink

I shoot 70 grains of FF in my .54 with a PRB, works okay.

Still looking for that DRT result on deer that I think I should get at least once in a while.

Do you guys try to break bone with these PRB on deer or just go for a double lung hit?

I have shot maybe a half a dozen deer with my 54 and while it kills them they still seem to go 50-75 yards.

Should I jump my 70 grain load up to 85-90 grains for more velocity which in turn yields more energy?

My 1:66 shoots good at 85-87 grains I just like the non-existent recoil of 70 grains.

Ive always tried for some bone in my shots. Sometimes they bounce around and do weird things tho. I don’t think I’ve ever had a deer run. All been DRT. Last deer I hit with my .50 PBR and 70 was a boomflop at about 35 yards. He was walking straight at me. I put sights somewhere around that white spot on his brisket. I believe right above it. Did about same thing to a dink spike with a 54 PBR. Difference was it went straight down his backbone. Kinda filleted his backstraps out.

10-4.

I think of the deer I have killed with it only 1 had been hit in bone, it was quartering to and ran maybe 20 yards.

Did have 1 that I thought was broadside and ran maybe 75 yards. Once I got to her and was field dressing her I realized I hit her just in front of the left ham and the ball was lodged in front of the opposite shoulder at the neck junction. No idea why I couldn't tell she was broadside.

Others have just been broadside, tight to the shoulder lung shots. May have to start trying to get at least 1 if not both shoulders.

Here's the ball from the doe. Maybe a 30 yard shot.

Weighs 218 as it sits. That is a nickle for comparison.

Found this old pic. Fyi! .395 RB removed from under skin opposite entrance side, pig and deer. Propelled by 50 grns FFFG.

Both DRT.

Had my repop P53 Enfield for 21 years. 4 deer and God knows how many Yankees. Lyman 575213OS and 70 grains of 3f Goex.
My newest 58 is a Euroarms 1863 Remington. Sweet rifle that I will be rebedding and resighting to be a hunter. She has a 1-48 twist and does well with minies.
With 60 grains of 2f Swiss, that Lyman moves out at 1062 fps. Even though she weighs 9 pounds, you KNOW you pulled a trigger! My mold is supposed to drop a 460 grain minie.
It drops a 505 grain. A bit heavy for an Old Style!
I can, using paper cartridges, with an empty musket load, aim and fire 3 shots in 52 seconds. And hit what I'm shooting at.
Reenacting has its benefits!

Keepin my back green and my powder dry.
The LORD bless and keep you

That is a helluva deer with anything. I talked to gunner right after he shot it this afternoon and he has one fine Hawken that will take the powder, and he doesn't hesitate to lean on it. 140 grains of KIK 2f and a .562 round ball carries the mail, big time. Those red specks you see scattered in the picture aren't little flowers or berries, they are bits of flesh and lung tissue. Gunner hit that deer right and proper, and it just doesn't get any better than a REAL Hawken and a patched round ball. Gunner said the rifle shot exactly to the sights at 133 yards.

Thanks Men, I logged in before daybreak till after dark for a tough and very cold 3.5 days of hunting looking for this old warrior, ole Bud said he was between 7.5 and 9.5 years old, a real tough old brute.

FWIW, he is 20 inches wide with 12 inch G2's, very observant on your part Sharpsguy, I didn't even notice the red chunks in the brush, I took a quick pic and got to work, a lot to do as nightfall quickly approached. smile

And many Thanks for posting the pic KW, I appreciate it, the big [18mph] West wind in my face had no concerns for drift at 133 yards, Thanks God! smile still cant believe that ball was packing that kind of freight at that distance, as the 140 grains of black powder smoke blew back over my face the old boss was thrashing about on the ground right where he stood.

The buck weighed 222 lbs dressed, those in the know, would that put that old hoss at close to 300 on the hoof?

I’d say close Gunner. I’d figure 40-50lbs for guts.

Pretty danged cool. Sounds like that big ball took him hard. Did it blow thru?

Dang, run off and hunt daylight till dark for a few days, then work daylight till dark for two weeks getting caught back up, it was all damn worth it though. smile

Thanks for all the Congrats Men, Big B, yessir it blew through, big exit hole in the ribs, still amazed at what a 58 cal ball will do, I saw the buck thrashing when the smoke cleared, and the hill I was on was a very dangerous descent getting down to him, I did have to take my eyes off him for a sec or two, he could have very easily flopped around and got behind the blood, lung and meat chunks, I found him as he lay in the picture, hit him on that side too.

Thanks Sharpsman, he may have been around 275 on the hoof, what an old stub, he was still getting with the girls, his inside hocks below the glands were completely rubbed raw, not one hair there, all gone.

Beretzs, speaking of a badass 58, I bet IdahoLewis' 58 will easily handle 200 grains, cast those balls at 16 to 1 alloy and you'd have a hole blaster extraordinaire.

Many Thanks Dan and Judman, you know rule number one with muzzle loader hunting after the shot is to immediately reload your rifle, you then go back to a participator and not a spectator, that said, you can see that bucks right eye is closed, I saw that as I walked up on him, I have never yanked my Colt SAA 45 out any faster, I trained the revolver on his head looking for breathing, eased over to see his left eye open, never saw that before. smile

Nice "Winder" rifle , 30-338! I had one built by Leonard Day. 45 x 45 cal. long time ago. Flinter with 13/16” AF bbls. That thing was as heavy as a dead Baptist preacher. I traded it off for something. I can’t remember what??? Almost 40 years ago.
