I mentioned in another thread that one side of the front wheel bearings were bad on the Ford tractor. So I ordered 2 sets of bearings, races, and seals. Figure if one is bad, the other cant be far behind, so I'll just change them both. So this morning I blocked up the front end and tore both sides down. Cleaned up the hubs and spindles, getting ready for the new bearings. Spindles looked good, but I noticed that the race fell out of the hub, on the side with the bad bearing, that's not good. Sure enough, the hub is worn..... had to order a new hub for that side.

While I was at it, I ordered a new set of stabilizer chains for the lifting arms. Got the kind with the screw adjustment. Never had stabilizers on this tractor and really need them, especially when running the bush hog.

Always something.

Randy I hate to hear of that.

What kind of tractor? Lots of hours?

I assume it's not a 4x4, or you'd have much deeper and costly issues..

Barry, it's a '65 Ford 4000, the first year with the 3 cyl. diesel. Not a 4WD. Not sure how many hrs. on on it. I bought it in '82 or '83 and except for batteries and a couple of front tires/tubes, it's been just about trouble free, until a couple of years ago.. Seems like every time I turn around, it's something else. New radiator, pto seal, hyd. linkage (that was my fault), seat, rear tire/tube, and now front wheel bearings, all in 2 years. Guess I shouldn't complain, for 35+ years, that doesn't seem like much.

That's really not bad... smile As far as repair lists go.

Hell, my new tractor has only 53 hours on it, and is in the shop already... Grrrrrr! mad

I can't really blame Mahindra, because it's probably a stuck EGR valve on that govt mandated emissions crap.

Don't know why they have to screw with tractors and pickups.

Imagine how much better things would be without all the govt emissions stuff...

When they got rid of the feeler gauges, dwell meters, and timing lights, they lost me. All this new stuff on the diesels is waaay beyond me, also. They had that DEF stuff on the diesels for a couple of years, before I ever knew it existed. Now I hear it's on tractors, too.

My tractor may be old, but it hasn't got all that stuff on it.

Hate to hear your new one is in the shop. Hope warranty covers the repairs.

If you were using feeler gauges, dwell meters, and timing lights on a diesel engine you were lost then.

Yeah, it's got 5 years of warranty. smile

EGR valve will fail pretty quick, if it's going to... so I'm hoping that's all for awhile.

New aftermarket hub w/ studs and nuts is less than $60. Never heard of putting a sleeve in a front wheel hub, but I'm sure it could be done. Just not sure where to get one or what it would cost.

I want both of you to know that I'm a modern farmer.... none of that old archaic stuff for me. Twine.... baling wire.... I use duck tape, gorilla glue, and electric fence wire to keep things going.

oldman3 that was the way to go . it would have cost more to have a machine shop build it up and machine it or sleeved it. if it can not found then you go to shop to have it fixed .people come in our shop all the time to have stuff fixed then bitch when it cost more than a new one .

Well the hub and bearings came in this morning. I hung sheetrock until about 11 am and it was hot.... no air stirring in the house, so I called it a day on that project. You can bet it will still be there in the morning. Went to the barn and put the hub and bearings on the tractor, it's ready to go as soon as the stabilizer chains arrive. Checked on them and they are 'out for delivery' with UPS, so they should show up this afternoon. Get them on and I should be ready to bushhog some of these grass/weeds down.

That thing's over a half century old, I wouldn't complain too much about a wheel bearing going out.

No need to apologize as far as I'm concerned. What you said was 100% spot-on. I had the hub delivered to the house in 4 days and that included a weekend.
