I want a 40 caliber rifle and really like the 450/400. I’ve had and do like Ruger #1’s. Just wondering who has one and your thoughts? L
Kinda like a 416 Rigby and 404 Jeff too. Can’t get ‘em all at once though!

I think it qualifies as a big bore in classic single shot form
I got banned on another web site for a debate that happened on this site. That's a first

I really liked mine. So disappointed I had to sell to finance a stock for another rifle. Big mistake on my part. I used a scope to find a load it liked, then put on a Skinner sight and a slightly larger front sight (from Brownell's). Even with a 24" barrel it was very handy going through the alder and black spruce lining Alaska's rivers. And so accurate! I'd show you a picture, but still haven't figured out how to get it on here. Go for it, you'll love it! I have that caliber in a #1 and a couple of Farquharsons, and they've taken a lot of the bigger species slam dunk!!

Thanks! They're a little hard to find but they do pop up occasionally...

I always say, I giggle every time I fire mine. Unless I'm shooting it from the bench, then I make other noises.

Had one for a while, and worked up a bunch of different handloads. It shot great with everything from cast bullets and black powder to jacketed 400's with smokeless charges that approach .416 Remington and Rigby velocities--at safe pressures. If you buy one, would be happy to send some along. First played with it in an old Manton double, but it's really easy to load for in a No. 1.

If not planning on going to Africa, I'd also consider a .405 Winchester, which may be easier to find, and certainly easier to feed. Also comes in High Walls (and 1895s of course).
Just a notion; not peeing in your punchbowl.
What fresh Hell is this?

Yep, no flies on a .405 that’s for sure. Wouldn’t mind one of those too!

I’ve got one and really like it. For a big bore in Roger #1 450-400 is the way to go imo

Cabelas had a sale on Ruger#1 in 450/400 last year. They were around $700. Which was a steal. You should be able to get one of these used cheaper?

I have enjoyed mine and while there aren't many cape buffalo or dangerous game here in Michigan we have lots of deer. I'm working on finding a reduced load to use with pistol bullets and it should make a great woods deer rifle.

Hell, for $700 I’d get two!
