I've been collecting a few parts the last 3-4 months, and it all came together this week.

It all started a while back when I picked up a low mileage 700 Krieger barrel chambered in 6x47 Lapua. Since I had a hundred brass laying around from another long gone barrel, I figured what the hay, I can use that.

Problem cropped up when I tried to screw it on the intended action. The counter bore was too short, and the bolt nose would bottom out before torquing the barrel on all the way. I tried another action, and two other bolts, but it was still a no go, so the barrel languished on the shelf.

One day a s/s 700 popped up for sale for too good of a price to pass up, so I had it sent my way. The problem barrel didn't fit that one either......dammit....

I had talked to a machinist buddy a while back about chucking up the barrel and taking 10 thou off the counter bore, so I finally called and set up a time for him to do it. He got 'er done, and the barrel screwed on all the way, bolt had clearance, and headspaces perfect.

I finally snagged the last piece of the puzzle when a Grayboe stock showed up online, and the parts list was filled. I already had the trigger, bottom metal, scope, rings, and rail on hand, so I put it all together and came up with this:

I like it so far. I did original load workup with a different stock, so I've only had it out once, which was last night to sight back in, & shoot at 1-2-300 yards.

It's the Terrain, which is a twin to a McM HTG, but with a little high comb. It's a little heavy, but it balances out the gun better. Overall weight isn't an issue, as it won't get far from the truck anyway.

I don't know if you can put a Nightforce scope on a gun and still call it "budget"... wink

Great looking rig though. You need to post up a range report when you get around to shooting it.

Ha ha.....I knew I'd get called out on the "budget" moniker.....

Load work is complete. I bought 1K of Hornady 108 2nds in keeping the budget theme alive.

39 grains of H-4350 at 3075 hovers at 1/2 MOA.

OUCH. Building a "budget" rifle is much akin to making the proverbial "stone stew" - if you add just one more thing, it will be so much better. Using stuff you have on hand and on the shelf is a zero expenditure and not felt in the hip pocket. Great looking rifle and Kudos for not throwing together a mess............

I like it!

I guess my point was, I bought a chambered Krieger barrel with under 300 rounds shot through it, a decent used stock, and a nice 700 s/s action that already had the bolt timed & tigged, all for not much more than the cost of a new Krieger or Bartlein barrel chambered & fitted to your gun. Plus I had the rings & rail, bottom metal, and an old style tuned trigger on the shelf. I "borrowed" the scope from another gun.

Goes to show what you can do with a little timing, patience, & minimal cash outlay.

I picked up the barrel for a great price, it just kinda snowballed after that..... crazy

So load work consisted of the moly plated Hornady 108's and H-4350.

Based on past results, simplified test was in 1/2 grain increments, from 39 to 41 grains.

Bullets seated in the lands with a square mark.

Both 39 and 40.5 grain loads showed promise, so next test was a shoot off between them.

Shot them side by side, alternating between the two, in less than ideal conditions at 200 yards.

Left three targets are 39 grain, right three, the 40.5 loads.

Decided to just go with the 39 grain load and call it a day. Velocity is right at 3075 fps average.

What was the barrel channel on the Grayboe?

Did you need to rework it much?

Well.......it was advertised as a Rem Varmint inlet.......ended up someone had opened it up to fit a Heavy Varmint contour.

So now, if you're a fan of plenty of barrel clearance, you'll have a permanent stiffie.......

On the plus side, she'll cool faster..........

Thanks Tim....

39 grain gives 3075

40.5 load was 3180.

1st day out, the 40.5 gave a .465" 200 yard group, with an ES of 9. Even though this is my go to load for my other 6x47's, it's a tad on the warm side with the 108's vs 105 Bergers in the others. The 3 extra grains plus the longer bearing surface of the Hornadys puts it over the edge.

The 39 grain load gives me easy bolt lift, and I can get with neck sizing only. 1st day testing it shot a .765" at 200, the next day a .900", then the 3 groups posted, so it's not a bad place to be......

Last one, eh Al? laugh

I can dig it.
I have that same stock on my 6mm Creedmoor - it is indeed on the heavy side - my sample is 44oz and was a wee off-kilter in both barrel and bottom metal inlet but nothing that couldn't be remedied.

Nice looking rifle! I’m sure you’ll shoot the hell out of it!

The bbl channel doesn’t look bad from here at all...
