I agree with 16bore. Drilled too far forward. May be so you can mount a shorter scope on a long action? grin...

No model 70 expert but in looking at the picture I'm also guessing the scope holes are not in the right location. I think the front one is Ok but the back hole should be further back??

There is a cutout in front of where the bolt release button is located. Is this a single shot? Looks like the bottom is not cutout for the ammo. Its hard to tell in the photo, but it appears that the top of the action, where the holes are drilled, is lower than the left side of the action. The left side should be lower than the top of the action. Again, this could just be the angle that the pic was taken. After looking at this more, I believe the way the light shine off the left side makes an optical illusion. Looking at it one way, the left side looks high, another way and it looks correct.
The holes appear to be drilled in about the right place, assuming they are straight. The front hole does appear to be drilled all the way thru, but the rear hole doesn't. Hard to tell the way the light is. They should be drilled all the way thru.

Newer BACO M70.. where the bolt would go, on the opposite side of the action, what is that big hole where you are seeing daylight? non of my Model 70s have that on them, that I recall....

Yeah Randy, makes me first wonder if someone overpressurized the action with a round that was miles over SAAMI specs...
couple of years ago, I found a piece of metal, that was stuck in wood behind one of the shooters bench.. it was as long as my thumb, and had Winchester stamped on it...had a heck of a time working it out of the wood with a pair of pliers....
evidently some local yoyo, blew up an action and unceremoniously left.. range never heard if someone showed up at the Local ER in the Hospital or Urgent Care....
the same situation be my first guess on the etiology of why the hole is there....

Why would that kind of damage be on the rear of the action and not showing any damage on the front of the action?

Cartridge let lose at the web, blowing primer etc...gunsmith had to remove what was left of the rest of the case...
I've seen aftermaths of a cartridge being way overloaded, and damaged the trigger and destroyed the stock when it let lose... once even destroying the scope...

Also look at the right side of the action, just on front of the top.... is that dark spot a shadow? Hard to tell in the pic.

Say what you want about the BACO guns, but they are much better machined and finished than the NH guns, even the 5 digit classics and I have owned a pile of em.
