Anyone know about the 405JES from the rebore man? I don't see info on Jesse's website and am interested in knowing its capabitilies, what is done to make up the case, and what actions are compatible? TIA Rusty

It's essentially a 444 Marlin necked down to .411. You can use 41 Mag jacketed bullets, at pretty high velocity, or use it with heavy cast bullets. A 265 to 300 grain cast bullet would make it a pretty good stomper. Some are claiming 2000 fps with bullets of those weights. A 280 grain .411 at 1600 fps would do some pretty heavy lifting. There is some data on the Cast Boolits site.

I've been keeping an eye out for a rusty bore 336 in 30-30 or 32 Special for just such a project.

Instead of necked down I should have said tapered down. It is similar to the 40-65 in that regard. But on a smaller rim diameter.

I don't have a bad 336. I have an older 94 but don't think that can be done as readily. I'm always looking for 336s if someone needs money. Watch the community boards at work and such. I hope to find one soon. Thanks and Be Well. Rusty

Actually, Marlin 336's and Glenfields can be found in decent shape pretty reasonably so it doesn't have to be a rough one. I just need to remember to look for them when I check my favorite haunts. I think I'll wait until I get our move concluded before I commit to any more gun projects. I'll have to find favorite new GS's to frequent.

I've looked at doing the 405 JES several times and haven't moved on it. I have an MP mold that drops a .411, 265 grain with a hollow point option so I can have either a flat nose or a large hollow point. I think one of these, cast on the soft side, powder coated and stepping out about 1600 would make a fine deer load.

From what I can gather you'll want a 336 with the fore end cap rather than the barrel band. I guess they are a little larger and work best for the rebore. You'll have to check with him to be sure but that seems to be the consensus on the Cast Boolits forum.

i have been playing with a couple different versions of the 411x444 for a few years, mine are not in lever guns, but have been pretty good deer medicine. The Hornady 300 FP kills stuff with authority, even at moderate speeds. The SP version seems to expand a tad less, and penetrate more.

I've also tried assorted cast, in 240/250/265 weights. Never tried anything over 300 grains, as my guns are very light...to light really for that caliber, and they start shoving me around a bit when loaded up. .41 pistol bullets tend to be somewhat explosive at those speeds, & will wipe out a lot of meat if you punch shoulders.

Had toyed with the idea of a levergun also, and got sidetracked with a few other projects, but at some point its on the to-do list.

Wonder how this cartridge would do in the Henry single-shot using bullets like Woodleigh, CEB, or even North Fork.

Performance wise, how close is the 405 JES to the 40-82?

I may have to back pedal here. I wonder if the 336 will handle this? Isn't the 444 sized 1895 needed to make this possible. Please correct me if I'm wrong? Be Well. Rusty

I believe the 336 and the 1895 are the same frame. I know Regan Nonnemann builds 50 Alaskans on either so I would assume the 336 and the 1895 are the same frame. I know the 1895 has a larger ejection port.

JES builds the 405 on 336's from everything I've been able to garner.

The 444 Marlin is a 336 action. The only discernable difference between the 1895 and 336 is the enlarged ejection port to accommodate the 45-70 brass.
