I like red-dots and use them on several different guns but would like to hear what alternatives you guys are using with shorter barrels (~10.5") to get a little more flexibility.....

I just put an AimPoint H2 with an American Defense mount on an 11.5".

Eotech holographic.
Not sure what kind of "flexibility" you're looking for, but if it's range, then a LPVO might be your huckleberry; I like them a lot, but usually on a 14.5 or 16" gun.

I often use a magnified optic on short barrels. Short barrel does not have to mean short range. This one is a 12.5", but I've done the same on 9" and 10" barrels as well. It works great, especially for hunting.

How about a Low power variable. Something in the 1-4x range?

What do you want the gun to do? The red dot is still the most common answer from 0-200 yds. To me, I don’t see a big difference in tasks for a 10’5 or 16” gun with red dots or LPVO’s

I use the SWFA 1-4 illuminated on my 12.5" Grendel, and a Burris 1-6 illuminated on my LMT. both work fine for close up to 400 yards.

both work fine for close up to 400 yards. That versatility is the important bit for me as well. That 12.5" Grendel in my pic above has a 3-9x Mark AR, which isn't popular here on the 'Fire, but has served me well out to nearly 700 yards with that gun while also being useful at short distances inside a house. (Although I would NOT want to light it off indoors; it seems significantly louder than my 10.5" 5.56.)

Yondering,
I shot my PSA upper with an AAC 7.62-SDN-6 can this weekend and it was a pussy cat for recoil and for noise.
I'm thinking 130 grain Berger AR Hybrids @ 2,4000 FPS will stop most fights indoors.

I have not tried the 130gr Berger, but would be surprised if you can get more than about 2,250 fps (more realistically 2,200) max from that 12.5". Not that it makes too much difference really. Closest thing I've used to that 130 Berger are the 129 ABLR (excellent match for this setup) and 130 RDF at ~2,200 fps each. Still haven't shot many of the 130 RDF but the 129 ABLR works really well for short barrel Grendel velocity, almost like that bullet was made just for this.
Mine is easy to shoot with a suppressor too, but pretty loud without. It has a single baffle brake so recoil is almost nothing but being LOUD is the compromise. It works great on a bipod prone though; kinda fun to hit 600 yard steel in what most would consider "rapid fire" because the gun doesn't really move much.

I got a Primary Arms 1-6 ACSS reticle with the illuminated chevron for my AR10. I would seriously pull it off to put it on a 300BO or similar if I had one. I think at 1x the illumination acts like any other red dot, but has longer range flexibility at 6x.

Interesting. That sure looks like a copy of the old Trijicon RX01 or a similar model; did the patent run out maybe?

I've been looking at the Primary Arms 1x reflex sight as a possibility for my 10/22 CSC. True 1x (they say), and can be focused to suit one's vision, unlike red dots. Eye relief seems good per specs. Works with or without batteries too.
Still thinking about exactly what this rifle will be used for, so for now the 2.5-7 Weaver and green CTC laser are on it.
What fresh Hell is this?

SWFA 1-6 HD would be the cream of the crop for what you want, if you can afford it.

Been killing time reading about some of the offerings and found it interesting. I have always had regular scopes and want to try something opposite this thread.... Either battery free or crazy 50000 hour stuff. I have a 10.5" 5.56 flat top coming.

Either battery free or crazy 50000 hour stuff. I have a 10.5" 5.56 flat top coming. Just my opinion, but I think red dot sights have come a long ways since the RX01 that it looks like Meprolight copied. I have used those, and certainly wouldn't buy one with my own money in today's market. If you're wanting to try a decent red dot that's not real expensive but has good battery life, take a good look at the Holosun and Primary Arms micro red dot sights. I'm using the Primary Arms MD-ADS which has a 2 moa dot and advertises 50,000 hour battery life. It sits on my bedside gun (a short 300 Blk AR) and leave it turned on all the time, and change the battery once per year. That particular model is the same physical size as the Aimpoint T1/T2 sights and fits T1/T2 mounts, but retails for about $170. Some of the Holosun models are pretty much the same thing; if I was buying another I'd consider either the MD-ADS again, or one of the circle/dot reticles in one of the Holosun models that uses a solar cell to prolong battery life. MD-ADS is on sale right now for $130: https://www.primaryarms.com/primary...-and-up-to-50k-hour-battery-life-red-dotThis circle/dot Holosun is out of stock, but is one I'd buy: https://www.primaryarms.com/holosun-hs503cu-circle-dot-hs503cuPersonally for anything beyond room clearing distance I prefer a magnified optic with a large eye box (hence the Mark AR on my Grendel above), but for what they are, that MD-ADS red dot has really impressed me. Just a side note on magnified optics - for close distances and keeping both eyes open, I much prefer a 3x instead of 1x at the low end. Double vision with a 1x can result in target confusion (for me anyway), but with 3x it's obvious which eye is which and is just as fast or faster for me. That goes against the current trend, but is what I've found works best for me after a lot of trial and error, and professional training. Hope that helps.

I put a Primary Arms 5X prism on the 10.5" while checking out accuracy. That gives a lot of nice viewing and reticle drops. I wanted to keep it light, so I'm just using irons day to day. Troy sight aft. Zero'd at 50 yards, pretty flat to 200 yards.
