So I have a desire I wanna scratch off the list of guns I want.

A day or 2 a year.... generally seem to be the best days...I run into nasty weather conditions that is just brutal on any kind of optics in the deer/bear woods.

I want a peep sight sight, compact fast handling rifle...

A lever gun seems to be a good answer.

I just don't know much of anything about levers. I think I'd be happier with a 16" gun opposed to a 20. But quick browsing seems the 16" guns bring a premium.

I don't need a collector gun. It can be rusted and beat up. I can refinish it or whatever...I can have it rebored if I can get it cheap enough to be cost effective. I wouldn't mind reboring to something "cooler" that hits a little harder than the 30-30 or whatever.

Just don't know what direction to start for finding a gun. What options are for shortening 20" guns?

I just don't wanna have a pile of money in a gun that's some purpose is nasty hunting.

Figured I'm not the first guy to want a short lever without paying collector prices...gotta be options that I'm not aware of.

Thanx!

If you're not shooting over 125 yards or so a 44 Mag or 45 colt, in a Model 92 clone, might be worth a look. They are readily available with 16" barrels.

Quote
At barely five pounds and less than a yardstick long, the Puma 45 Colt carbine balances perfectly and is a joy to handle. Magazine capacity is listed at eight, but it happily accepts nine rounds of typical RNFP 45 Colts loads. With careful handloading it is also amazingly versatile. 335 grain Keith SWC’s, over what we’ll call ‘over 20 grains’ of Winchester 296, produce 1364 fps from its 16 1/8” barrel. I would expect a wound profile from that load not unlike the old 45-70 Trapdoor ‘carbine load’. For lighter game, a Sierra 240 JHP can easily be driven to 1550 fps. My factory duplication load of 7.2 of W231 with a 255 grain RNFP runs 950 fps from this carbine, with insignificant recoil. John Linebaugh’s ‘working load’ of 13.0 of HS6 and a 255 SWC ran 1232 from the Rossi; and in reality you don’t need much more for the anything but biggest of game.

Thanx guys! Will look into them!

I know next to nothing about levers. I first hunted with a Winchester M88...I know I don't want an 88 or 99 just because they are bulkier and heavier. Light and fast handling is what I'm looking for.

I've been hunting with Remington 760/7600s for awhile. Love them...but they aren't exactly light. I setup a Kimber Montana in 308 for my scoped rifle which will be the majority of my days....

Like I said, I am looking for a peep/ghost ring setup for nasty weather times...was looking at finding a real cheap Remington pump gun...and still exploring the avenue. I run into badly beat up and rusted things still bringing over $300. By the time I clean it up and restock and likely rechamber it, I have a good amount of cash sunk into it.

The 7600P comes exactly as I want. But hard to find and guys think they are collectors items apparently lol.

Figured I'd explore lever gun options as well. Not in any kind of hurry so I can wait till I find what works for my idea.

I spend my days tracking if there is snow and still hunting (sneaking through the woods)... keeping the rifle ready is critical...and my 22" scoped Remington pumps really start wearing on the arms... cut down, synthetic stock, no scope will lighten the load a good bit. Or a 6ish pound lever gun...

I sold an Interarms import Rossi in 45 LC to another member on here a coupla years ago. That was a dandy little rifle that I shouldn't have parted with....

Two thumbs up for a 45 Colt lever gun. Mine has a tang peep, which is more than you need, but it is accurate and quick on target. And Rossi has made enough for everybody to enjoy.

Summer sight-in? Wear a sissy pad and appreciate how well our fall hunting clothes dampen recoil when enough oomph for a bear is needed.

20” carbines are plenty short for what you want. Try one on for size before going shorter

Don't live here or buy here...just AM here.

Check Keith's Sporting Goods in Oregon...best prices or Sportsman's, Walmart, Bimart, etc for sales.
