Anyone else bothered by the disparate wear between the floorplate and the bolt knob?

Will be an interesting one to watch.

the floorplate wear would definately be of concern to me. The rest of the rifle is clean and crisp and the floorplate has far too much finish loss. It doesn't match the hinge plate either, highly suspect of having been replaced. Most astute collectors would reject it for that reason.

I would think that would be a well taken care of hunting rifle that was carried for years balanced on the floorplate.

That was my first thought too, but I hear what Gunswizard is saying, even if I had that kind of cash I'd be super careful about dropping it on this one.

My Super Grade is my go to deer rifle and I hunt with it every year, the stock and the rest of the metal though well cared for show they've been hunted with. While my rifle is a standard grade with steel floorplate it doesn't show near the amount of wear that rifle does. I know that anodized aluminum is not as wear resistant as blued steel, but that rifle's floorplate shows wear inconsistant with the rest of the rifle's surfaces.

I would bid on it, but I'd feel bad about having to glass bed it...

Why would anyone go through the trouble of making up the whole gun and leave the floorplate (and buttplate) in that condition?

That is a tough one. The difference in color between the hinge plate and the floorplate is normal; I have never saw them match, but the wear on the floorplate just doesn't match with the rest of the gun. It may just be lighting or was just a bad job from the get go??? It may have come from the factory mismatched with a steel floorplate and the owner put an aluminum one on it? It is usally the other way around though, aluminum SG plate on a Standard or African?? Who knows. I think it is a true Super Grade not a parts gun. If those things could talk.

Another fella and I were jaw jacking about this rifle. I mentioned I’d make sure the wood is sealed internally and probably hunt the crap out of it.

He said he’d be worried about hurting the value of it for future collection. I think I’d let the next guy worry about the value and I’d just enjoy hunting with such an iconic rifle.

Besides, it’s a P64 270, I’d almost bet a dollar it’ll shoot well as it sits.

Looks legit to me. The buttplate finish is delicate and rubs off easily over the years. The wear on floor plate looks more like a purple hue of aged anodizing. Looks to me like a gun that hasn’t been molested yet.

Yeah, and you shoot the chidt out of it and end up with a cracked stock like your Alaskan. Which is worse? Id glass bed it and freefloat the barrel and never have to worry about it again. It would be so much more consistent too.

It would be unconscionable to alter that stock.
Very unlikely that a 270 would crack a stock.

Seller has added a bunch of additional pictures. I’m leaning towards agreeing with 78CJ’s initial assessment after viewing them.

In the added photos the floorplate looks much better than in the originally posted pics. At $3250 with 5 days to go and not meeting the reserve, it certainly will be interesting to see what the selling price is.

Those additional pics confirm that gun as the real deal. Why would he have posted that horrible pic of the floorplate is beyond me. Looks good now.
