Just downloaded the new Handloader with JB's article on .270 loads with newer powders. Excellent stuff, and about dang time! It gets very frustrating when articles just rehash the same old stuff again and again. Thanks, John.

Seems to run a bit longer than most too; a good thing. Didn't count the words, (even I don't have enough time for that!) but I'd bet it ran over 1500.

BTW, where did you see the RL26 data for 160gr NPs you mentioned while discussing the long Berger?

I have not read it , yet.
John's writing usually teaches me something and have tried RL 26, it is a game changer with the .270 wcf.....looking forward to the article

I always learn something from John's articles, whether a technical point, a human observation, or a turn of phrase. My favorite outdoor writer these days.

Actually, I started to come up with the Reloader 26 load for the 170 by comparing IMR7977 and RL-26 data for 150-grain bullets, where listed maximum charges are very close. Hodgdon lists 60.0 grains of 7977 as maximum with the 160, so I reduced that a little for the 170-grain Berger, which worked so well I then tried a similar charge with RL-26.

I use W780 with 160s and have enough for the "duration", so to speak, with one jug open and another in reserve for my old age. Might have to crank out some with 26 just for fun.

W780 always looked good in the burn charts. Never used the stuff but had a few friends that liked it a lot.

Is this the infamous 270 Winchester about which people on 24 Hr Campfire often complain? Wow, good for you, John!

New powders, eh? The 270 is no longer carbureted, but has been dragged, kicking and screaming, into the 21st century? Complete with FI and Sirius XM? Well done!!

Steve, you need to add a round loaded with the 160gr NP to your pic. Shouldn't take you more than a year and three attempts to get them......😛

Great article as usual. I haven't tried RL26 in mine, but have used Hunter for about 12+ years when I saw it on Powder Valley for $13 a pound and decided to try it. It's been great from day one for me, though I've always used Fed 210 primers. Maybe one day I'll try the 215's and see what they do with it.

So, MD is not swallowing the Fire idiots mantra that the 270 doesn't get the job done?

My .270 is one of the last firearms I would ever let go of.
The possibilities to run heavier for caliber bullets at reasonable speeds has my attention 👍
There’s thousands of .270’s out there harvesting everything from rabbits to moose, routinely.
