Went to a one room country school in Kansas, in late 50s, till mid 60s. We had one for boys and one for girls. Midway through school, indoor toilets were installed but the outhouses remained.

Mom started out teaching country school. They had two little houses behind the trees beyond the "playground". First day of school, a new little fellow needed to go. Mom gave him permission. He was back after a short time and reported that he couldn't find it. She patiently explained the directions. He left, but soon returned - still couldn't find it. She walked him to the door and pointed out the clump of trees. He left. He returned - still couldn't find it. Mom had one of the older boys escort him. When they returned, Mom asked the older boy if everything went all right this time. He replied, "Yeah, he had his underwear on backwards".

There was still one on my GreatGrandparents Ranch when I was a kid.

Yes. Or a seat that is portable. It hangs on a nail by the door. Very toasty at 40 below.

Summer time in PA, black snakes tend to hang out in the rafters.

We had one behind the house a ways! When the spring water lines to the house froze, mom made us boys use it! The girls got to use the bathroom toilet, with water we hauled from the spring in buckets! Mom said girls had different needs, so don't complain. Worst part was it was a two seater, my brother could run a maggot off a gut wagon, with his stench!

No reading material needed. Make the trip when you NEED to, be, um, efficient, and go stand next to the woodstove. BTDT. wink

For those with access to Capstick's Death in the Long Grass, there is an excellent story about the bwana blowing up the crapper.

We call our deer camp out house "Cold Comfort" for a reason. One does not loaf on the John on 14 degree F mornings.

That's about when my grandpa had an indoor bathroom installed at the farm. The outhouse was still in use for a secondary toilet until long after the farm was sold. I remember moving the house forward on Halloween as it was not uncommon for someone to try and tip it over when in use. Moving the outhouse left the pit open for the "pranksters" to fall in. There were a couple times it worked.

One did not have constipation or diarrhea when it was cold though the latter could be a problem when bundling up and unwrapping when cold.

An addendum to the OP - which catalogs were most used in your outhouse? Sears, Monkey (Montgomery) Wards, and J. C. Penny were most often found in ours.

As a further aside, the number of black widow spider bites dropped markedly with the increase of indoor plumbing. Seems outhouses made for good habit at for them.

My grandmother had a very well built two seater at her place in PENN. Didnt mind using it, always kept an eye out for hornets in the summer time though. They always liked to build nests in the ceiling

Yep, had to use the Sears catalog when I was a tyke. Those glossy pages weren't great for cleaning, mostly like greasing the skids.

Outhouse at remote cabin is pole framework wrapped with poly tarp, tarp is put up taken Down every trip due to weather and potential flood. Solid roof on frame.

essentials are a coffee can over tp, PIC, and Bic. Coffee can protects tp from moisture and squirrels and as platform to burn the PIC, or sometimes even Buhach.

Wife insists I go out and light things up before she goes out.
