A Savage 99 EG with a Lyman 57 SA in the 250-3000 was my first deer rifle. When I think about it was probably from peer pressure. My Father and his brothers all hunted with a 99 250-3000 in the Wisconsin deer woods. A few 99s have come and gone over the years and I have one now that will never be sold or gifted. 99-A

A Speer 87 grain bullet was used in all the 1-14" ROT 99s for Whitetail deer and saw no need to change that in the 99-A 1-10" ROT. Reloads are 34.5 grains H4895. On a whim recently, I tried Hornady/s 100 grain factory ammo and it was accurate in my 99.

All I have is a .250 improved. It says 6.5 Creedmoor on the barrel.

Mexican Mauser with a pac-nor barrel shoots 100gr Sierra prohunters very well.

Most of the 250-3000 rifles older than 50 years have a 1-14" ROT which limits the length/weight of bullets that will stabilize, but most newer rifles, except for the 1986/87 Winchester/USRA 70 Lightweight Carbine, have a 1-10" ROT and will accommodate most any weight/length of .257" component bullet.

The Remington 700 Classic in 250-3000 came with a 24" barrel, so you should be able to squeeze all the velocity that is possible at safe working pressures.

I only have one Remington chambered in 250-3000, a Model Seven with a 700 Classic barrel that was trimmed back to 21" and is part of a matched pair, the other having a 700 Classic barrel in 300 Savage.

Do you still have Kohler’s Model 20?

Nice to hear so many folks shooting and enjoying the .250. I`ve two AI`s, but my original is a mod.20. I`ve had it cense I was 13. I`m now 76, can`t even do the math as to how long that is!
Lots and lots of loads. I`d shot mostly light bullets out of it for both deer and chucks when it had the original 14 twist barrel, fact used 60 grners by both W-W HP and Speer 60 grn. spitzers. Both bullets vaperized any chuck or crow hit within 150 yrds. My 64 Lyman load book suggest a max load of 41 grns 4895 for 3600 fps. I`m sure I used this, as I pushed the 250 hard. My Dad had mounted a Weaver 3/4 inch K 2.5 post and cross hair on. He said I would have trouble shooting at such small stuff with that scope at any distance over 100 yrds. He was right..I eventually went to a newer variable 3x9 scope and a 10 twist Douglas barrel, which it still wears, and realized a lot more flexibility out of the cartridge.
Newer loads would include the 80 grn. TTSX using 39 grns of 4320, and I really like the 100 grn Nosler partition with 37.5 4320, at 3165 and 2940 fps out of my 22 inch barrel. Both shoot very very well.

My load was 100BT with 34.4 of IMR 4895

I used some unheadstamped "Federal" brass that I've had for 20yrs. It is a nice pleasant rifle to hunt with.

Man oh man, what a rifle...

This is my only 250/3000. A Lipsey's stainless Ruger 77MKII RSI in a synthetic stock sourced here at the fire. It shoots pretty good for an 18 1/2" barrel.

Mine is a tang safety Ruger Ultralight. It wears a Vari-X ll 2-7x32 Loopy. The rifle is in a very used condition with much of the bluing missing from the barrel and the stock has numerous scratches and dings. When I got it the stock had a hard clear finish that had cracked with age so I hit it with paint stripper and took it off. I then rubbed in oil by hand to the wood and it brought the walnut up a pleasing reddish colour. Despite its looks the little rifle still shoots under an inch with just about every 100gn bullet I load in it. I found the 100gn Ballsitic Tip a little hard at 2770 fps out of the 20 inch barrel. Pigs tended to run off a ways before going down and I once shot two pigs with the one 100gn BT. I now load the 100gn Hornady SP and find it kills much better on every thing from foxes to pigs. I have not taken a deer with it yet. Despite the 20 inch barrel I load 39gn H4350 with any 100gn bullet and found that that powder gave me better velocity than either H4895 or Varget.

My .250 Savage is an AR-15 that rides under the back seat of the truck. You've seen one of the ugly things. So you've seen them all. Unloading the 20 round mags full of cheap steel case ammo to put in fresh ammo about once per month is fun. If you're wondering how I got a .250 Savage in an AR, it was easy. I just asked for 6.5 Grendel.

The one below isn't mine. It belongs to the spouse and comes in under 7# all up. It has been completely effective on GA whitetails so far.

My 700 Classic has been glassed and floated. 40.3gr RL15 and 75gr V-max gives 3400fps and is devastating on chucks. Not a book load, but safe with long brass life in mine, and sub-half inch groups. 37gr of 4320 and 100gr NBT clocks 3003fps, and shoots right at 1/2", although I prefer Hornadys. About 60fps slower and groups are a whopping 3/4". Also have a 99 Savage, Dakota 76 Alpine, and a M70 compact classic in .250AI.

Sqweeler,

I have an identical RSI. Have you found a pet load that it loves that you'd be willing to share? I haven't got to develop anything for mine yet. TIA

I haven't shot my 77 RSI for a few years, but I have 186 rounds of ammo on the shelf for it that is made with the following recipes:

Winchester/Olin brass
CCI Large Rifle primer
100 grain Nosler Partition bullet over 33.5 grains of H4895 for deer
90 grain Sierra BTHP bullet over 35.2 grains of H4895 for coyotes
75 grain Hornady VMax or Sierra HP over 36.2 grains of H4895 for all varmints.
