Making a 3/8" plate steel (A36 mild) sign for our mountain in WV. Using a friend's CNC plasma cutter... Anniversary present for Laura. 36" long on the horizontal. We had a software glitch and the machine misaligned "layers", but we will try again. Very fun stuff. Preliminary design at bottom. Plan to drop a bunch of Cant hooks from the "dead" space and build a half dozen premium tools. [ Linked Image] [ Linked Image] [ Linked Image] [ Linked Image] [ Linked Image]

Several years back a family friend invited us to an open-house at the factory where he worked. One of events they had there was to cut out the background of pennies with plasma cutters used in their daily operations and give them to kids in attendance. Pretty amazing the fine detail work they could do.

Thanks guys... yes, my design.
We are having fun learning the machine. It will run up to 9' x 12' plate steel and up to 2" thick (have to switch from plasma to oxy acetylene on thicker stuff).
I'll get up pics of the final sign. may do a ranch gate as well.

Cool stuff. I love metal fab. A CNC plasma is on my short list of tools. A couple more months if things go well.

It looks great. I would in a metal fab shop so I am around steel all the time. Why did you choose material so thick?

Why did you choose material so thick? Not really sure, it just feel right to me mostly. Kinda "substantial" if you know what I mean. Also has a nice 3D effect on the edge. Quick pricing on a 4' x 8' piece of 3/8" mild (A36) was $250 4' x 8' piece of 3/8" hardened (AR500) was $730

Cool sign. Planning on painting it? If so what type of finish?

I like the Natina look... https://www.natinaproducts.com/services/steel/But that works best on galvanized, so still pondering... May cold blue. I like a rusty look, but do not want rampant decay. Paint is out. Powder coating is out.

Neat. You can do some really cool stuff with a CNC plasma.

Certain steels are designed to acquire a surface rust that protects them from further rust... I may look at those steels in the future... Similar to charred wood for wood durability... https://www.ecohome.net/guides/2204/shou-sugi-ban-carbonized-wood-siding/

Worked out the bugs (for the most part). 3/8" plate steel... sign is 32" wide and 25" tall... about #45. Cost was per square foot... sign is 5 square feet at $60 per... so $300 for the finished sign. The plasma tip circulates coolant... some coolant was escaping this circulation and got into the plasma stream so we had a build up of slag as we cut (i.e. that is why the letters didn't drop free). Problem we have to solve yet.

Great looking sign.
Seen that kind of cutting done with high pressure water cutters also.

Mostly just learning the machine at the moment... will try and sell stuff after we get the bugs worked out. Stuff like big ranch gate signs and heavy timber joining plates... maybe even some custom staircase stringers... Just having fun with a new toy (belongs to a close friend).
