I was wondering what you all think. I am debating on buying a NF SHV 4-14 F1 to replace my SWFA 3-15 FFP. It's on a Remington 700 20" .308, so the question is would it be a huge upgrade for another $500??

Why don’t you like the SWFA?

I was going to put it on my .223 TC Compass.

Not an apples/apples comparison, but I have the 3-15 SWFA and a 3-10 SHV.

Both scopes are absolutely trustworthy in regards to dialing, the SHV has better glass, the SWFA has exposed turrets and can easily set up a zero stop.

I'd absolutely love to get an ForcePlex-equipped SHV 3-10 with exposed elevation and a zero stop. I know, I can take the cap off, but I'd like a real turret for that.

Short answer is: I think you'd get an upgrade in glass. And, it's not like the SWFA glass is all that bad, either.

I'm sure I was a lotta help.....(grin)

I have that exact NF scope for sale in the classifieds. The only reason I am selling it is to pay for something else. I really like the scope.

If you have the extra cash, you certainly won't regret having the Nightforce. It sounds like you need to get a second scope anyway.

I haven’t used the SS 3-15 so can’t make a direct comparison. I had/have several of the SS fixed powers. I have had an SHV F1. It was a fine scope. Maybe slightly brighter than the SS, turrets were more positive, and it had a zero stop, which I deem essential. $500 better? Hard to say, but if you look carefully, you can find pre owned SHV F1s for 900ish.

Vic in Va,

It's pretty easy to turn an SHV into an exposed elevation turret with a zero stop. I posted this photo on 7/20, explaining how it was pretty easy to make the zero-stop washer from a PVC pipe purchased at the local hardware store:

I saw that, and at some time going to pm you about details.

For various reasons I really like that scope but have gotten spoiled by zero stops. That one appears to work on the same principle as the ones you can get for the SWFA.

Yep, that's what inspired me to head to the hardware store.

I bought a SWFA to try, returned it because I thought the crosshairs were too fine for ends of daylight. I bought an SHV to "try". I own 3 if that says anything.

Do you have a link to that post or what forum did you post it in - I have a 3-10x that I need to do this on.

I have an SHV 4-14 F1. I don't like the tunnel effect that the scope has. It is also more critical of eye relief than scopes in its price class. If I had to do over, I would've bought something else along the lines of a Burris XTR II for less.

I liked the SHV so much, that i ended up buying 2 more Nightforce rifle scopes. Absolutely no regrets.
