I tried using IMR 4064 all the way up and down the powder recommendations using a hornady 95 grain SST bullet. I could not not get it to group at all. The best was in the 2 to 3 inch group at 100 yards.

I can grab this rifle a weatherby 243 and a cheap box of hornday whitetail 100 grain soft point and shot sub moa all day with it. So I know its not the scope or the rifle. I am using good new brass and I have prepped it very well also federal match primers.

I have about 300 rounds of the SST bullets that I would like to shoot at a low or medium velocity to let my 9 year old son deer hunt with.

I am seeking any power recommendations you might have for a 95 grain SST bullet in 243. My go to powder is usually IMR 4064 as this is the first time I could not get it to work. I dont like stocking alot of powders but I have several pounds of H1000, W748, IMR 4198, CFE BLackout all of which im sure are not right for a 243.

I have a small amount of H4895 that I could try. Any input please????

Check out the “Hodgdonreloading” site. Of the powders you list, H1000 is probably the moat appropriate. I like IMR 4350 or H 4350 for 95 and 100 gr bullets in the 243. You might also want to try varying seating depth.

You can try h4895 but like suggested above maybe adjust your oal and see what happens.

IMR4064 and H4895 both burn a little fast for the 95's in my opinion.

Reloader 26 is what you want to go with. 95gr. or 100gr. makes no difference. Start around 46 gr. and work up. My load is 48.0 gr. of RL26 behind a 95gr. Partition.

For low or medium velocity I would try 4895 or 4198.


4350 has shot excellent for me with 95’s but they’re not low or medium velocity.



H1000 is excellent for me with 105’s.

I've only loaded for one 243 but had good luck with H4350 and 90-95 grain bullets.

H4350 used to be hard to find so I bought a keg of IMR 4451 which also has worked well.

For a low recoil load for a 9 year old, I'd start with 30 grains of H4895 expecting velocities somewhere in the high 25's to low 26's. You could work up from here, checking his comfort levels and seeing what the rifle likes.

Not all rifles like the SST. Other proven options include the 85gr Sierra Game King, 95gr NBT, or if you want to keep the bullet weight down but not sacrifice terminal performance, Shooters Pro shop has 85 grain Partition over runs on sale:

Again, I'd start with H4895 since is scales so well with reduced loads.

We have a .243 Savage that will shoot the lights out with 100 grain Nosler Partition and a max load of IMR 4350

Son in law used 4895 with the 95 Partition at lower speeds to start both Grandkids out. That Tikka 495 Whitetail Hunter would about shoot ground limestone for powder well though.
