Yep. As GR suggested, the on dishonorable discharges I saw were for felony convictions after time serves.
Keep in mind, there's no suggestion he was convicted of possession or dealing, he just failed a piss test. Typically this would result in the revocation of a security clearance. This could lead to an Article 15 and reassignment to something not requiring a clearance, like cook or mechanic, or and administrative discharge.
Ending someone's military career is typically considered punishment enough for failing a piss test.

To get a dishonorable discharge you have to be court martialed, since it's essentially the equivalent of a felony there has to be due process so some sort of trial has to be held . An administrative separation is not punitive, it just basically means "you're fired" and you go out the door, no due process required. Pop positive on a piss test or get caught with a small amount of coke then you'd likely get admin sepped, get caught dealing it and you'd get court martialed with jail time and a dishonorable discharge.
When I was in the Marine Corps we had a female warrant officer that was having an affair with a senior enlisted guy, she was administratively separated and he was told to retire.
