I have a nice box of Western Super X 22LR hollow point bullets in a bright yellow box with the common red Western diamond. Inside are 10 boxes of 40 rounds each for a total of 400 rounds. The product code on the outside corner of the large main box states W22LRHP. These bullets are 40 grains. Nowhere is it listed though as to what the fps rating is for these rounds. I would like to know as some of my revolvers can only fire standard velocity rounds whereas my semiauto rifles and pistols needs the high velocity stuff. Maybe some of the older knowledgeable shooters might know the fps rating for these rounds? I'm guessing they are 1960-1970's vintage and what little bit I have shot using them they fire really well and are consistent. I've contacted Winchester Ammunition but I haven't heard anything back from them in a while. There are no ballistics charts I can find with fps data of the Western 22 LR ammo. Any info you may have would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

The old yellow/red box were advertised at 1335 fps. for 40 gr and 1365 for 37 gr hp.... (sounds a little optimistic to me) From an old 1967 Gun Digest. If I'm looking at the right one. No barrel length specified.
Well this is a fine pickle we're in, should'a listened to Joe McCarthy and George Orwell I guess.

OP: The only guns I wouldn't shoot that HV stuff in would be pre-war things made before the introduction of HV ammo in the early 30's. While a lot of them would digest it ok, a lot of them can be battered by using it. (Example: pre-1932 Colt Woodsman.) Pretty much any decent gun made post-war would be up to the task, pistol or rifle.

I've got an old '50's era Gun Digest back home myself and I can look it up. I didn't realize that those early .22's were hotter than the current stuff, or maybe it was just creative advertising because no one owned a chronograph back in those days.
My other auto is a .45

Which revolvers are you concerned about firing those rounds out of? I'm curious as well. I can't imagine any modern 22LR having issues.

Thanks all for some good information regarding my question. The majority of the consenus seems to be high velocity putting the fps right at 1285. In response to those with questions about which pistol should only shoot standard velocity ammo it is my Uberti 1873 Cattleman revolver. The owner's manual specifically states to use standard velocity ammo only. That's OK, I have plenty of other rifles/pistols that I can use this ammo in so thank you all again.

As a member and frequent visitor to Rimfire Central Forum, RFC, I cannot tell you how many times for handguns, rifles that CCI Standard velocity is recommended both for quality and dependability. Avoid Remington.
