High 2800’s to low 2900’s. They will work, but the 120’s at 3100+ will work too.

The Barnes 140gn worked very well culling brumbies out of my 275 Rigby loaded to 2900fps.
I would certainly use it on elk.

Over the years I have taken elk with cals' from 6.5 to .338. The Barnes mono has been the king of elk bullets for me. 120gr in 6.5, 130 in 270 & 140 in 7mm. Never have failed me..They will almost every time give complete penetration thru mature elk even at acute angles thru heavy bone & muscle. They only thing I would stress is be very aware of what is on the other side of the elk you shoot. It is very easy to shoot two elk with one shot. The 140 TSX in 7mm will handle game much heavier than elk. The importance of a squeeze trigger & proper bullet placement id paramount. Many of the elk I have taken have been under 100yds thru little openings. I can't stress enough being able to make accurate off hand shots. Practice, practice practice.

While not the 140g TTSX, I've used the 150g TTSX out of a 7mm RM on a few elk and it's been excellent. At times I've wished I would have started with the 140g instead of the 150g since the extra speed wouldn't hurt (and possibly help) with the solid copper bullet. However, I have a good load and enough loaded up I see no reason to switch now.

I'd have absolutely zero qualms about a 140g TTSX out of a 7 WSM on elk.

I have killed several elk with 150 gr TTSX with 7mm Weatherby so I’m sure the 140 will work just fine. I load the 140 TTSX for my 7x57 but have yet to shoot a critter with it. Happy Trails

TTSX-they are bees knees
my main elk gun , 30-06 shoots 168s. my back up 270, 130s. I'd have no problem to use this combo on any deer, elk, moose.
I still have to recover a bullet out of 7 elk. ranges 40-400 yards

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

Around 2850-2900, realistically.

I've used 120 TSX's at 3000 - 3050 for a long time & they work just fine on elk.

Plain old cup and bullets killed dozens of elk for me... I am sure this should be outstanding, they just beat these questions to death...

Killed one bull with my .284 Win using the 140gr TTSX at 2920 FPS. Range 247 yards with bull not quite facing me but close. Bullet entered where the chest met the right shoulder and destroyed the inside portion of the joint, took out the lung behind it, traveling completely through the animal and exiting through the thick ham muscle on the other side. A little over 4’ of penetration through a mature bull.

He tried to run, but couldn’t, staggering for a brief second before falling over and expiring.

I’d have no qualms about using that combo again.

I’ve also used the 120gr TTSX from the 7-08 and works beautifully on elk.

Just loaded up some 145 LRX for my 7 Mag. At 200 yards those copper bullets are rough on my steel targets. At 400 yards they still wallop the railroad plate.
I can’t wait to run one through a elk this season.

140 gr out of anything will do it. My .260 did fine on the lone elkI have takenwith it

It just took two decent bull caribou on successive days. As it had several times in the past, as well. Up next, maybe, is moose.

Can't see how 140's could do worse in a .28

Oh yes, they were all factory Core-lokts. Yawn.... smile

Deans what length barrel? Thanks for your time. Cheers NC

24" Benchmark #5 contour 5R. On the heavy side but carries well.

120 gr TTSX at about 3050 fps out of my wife's 7-08ai took a nice bull at 400ish yards, Put the bull down, but he needed a finishing shot when she got up to the animal. If I had it to do all over again today, I would load her the Barnes 139 gr LRX, Due to the higher BC, that bullet would have caught up in velocity by about 350yds, and would have been a better choice for the distance she had to shoot.

If you're potentially shooting elk at a distance where bullet expansion could be challenged, it's hard to see any case where the 140 TTSX would be a better choice than the 139 LRX, imho

With a 24” barrel Barnes says you can get 2900-2930ish with several powders. At 2900 fps, that puts you right at 1500 fpe at 400 yards at 5k feet elevation with the 140 gr. I’d shoot an elk at that range with the 7-08. Since the 120 gr ttsx at 3200 fps (with big game powder in my rifle) has outstanding accuracy and the same energy at that range with more speed to open up, I think I would just use it.

The 120 TTSX is a great bullet for elk out to 400 yards in the 7-08. Taken a few bulls with it quite handily.

Well, it worked. Got one last night. She came out on a hill we were watching. We had already ranged some points, so knew she was 300-325 yards. She was quartering away from me, feeding. Put it just behind the onside shoulder, came out the front of the far shoulder. My buddy said she dropped like a bag of hammers, kicked twice and that was it.
