Archery in my area closes today in WY. Rifle opens in 10/15. I've been out a few times and now have to switch gears from archery mode to gun, so.....
1) How much snow pushes them down? I haven't found them yet, but I've been moving higher, 9000+ last Friday, didn't find elk, but found snow! I've found lots of old sign in lower places, how much snow does it take to move elk lower?
2) I assume bugling is a waste of time, so glass then spot and stalk?
What can I expect come rifle? I've found more camps than elk, so I figure more people, at least early in rifle?
Being totally new to this, what am I looking for and should I expect?

Occasionally they will be bugling Oct 15. Some areas get tons of snow before the elk move down and some start moving first snow of the year. Talk with the biologist if you can get ahold them.

I would find a pinch point down to private and hunt that opening day if they move onto private in your area.

It's steep, nasty & you don't want to go down into that canyon-----that's where the elk are.

If you want to know how much snow it takes to move elk, you'll have to ask the elk because they'll do what they darn well want to. I got one last year after they moved and it only took 8 or 10". What moved them wasn't so much the snow depth but rather the snow drove out the hikers and bikers. I've also seen them high in 2'.

In all seriousness I suggest meadows with good grass, in tough m-to-get-to spots, near north facing slopes covered with a mixture of pine and aspen groves. Water is pretty much everywhere but a close water source might be beneficial.
And there are hundreds of those spots so there’s a bit of time and luck involved.

Seems like 8 to 10 inches (enough to cover the grass) gets them lower in Wyoming. Cows/calves the lowest and bulls hanging slightly higher. Have heard and seen Wyoming bulls calling during the third week in Oct there as well. Sounds like one is having a great fall. Envious,
