Steve - Congratulations on publishing the book. No Quarrel with your choice of caliber, just wondering if you considered necking up or down to other calibers? 8 mm comes to mind as having some possibilities for the Enfield platform . Interested in your thoughts.

Again congrats

Hi. Thank you. It was a little late coming.

I have necked down to 6.5 Epps, before 6.5mms were popular. I have also done the 303 Epps. The problem with the Epps cartridges, as I see it, is with feeding and case taper. The Epps conversions reduce the taper and the cartridges tip up as they leave the mag.

Necking down or up and leaving the case the same will work, but I am unsure at what diameter, smaller or larger, that feeding would become an issue. This would be a problem with the feed ramp. I know that others have necked them up and down, leaving the original case taper, and may answer.

The primary reason for doing the 30-303, in my view, is that many of these rifles have worn or rotted out barrels. It's best to replace them with a 308 diameter barrel because there are more bullet weights and type available. As well, only a few, easy to perform changes need to be made to std 303 British dies.

Any newly mad, modern barrel will improve accuracy - especially barrels that were mass produced during the wars.

As well, the original barrels were .313 to .314 diameter, but jacketed bullets are only made in .311 and .312. They are undersized. Some bullets will obturate and seal the barrel, but many won't and accuracy suffers.

Ever experiment with 35-303 or 9,3-303?

They might make for a reasonable re-bore.

The 30-303 in strong guns with good barrels would be a great medium powered round, IMO. Congratulations on your publication! cool cool

Hi. Thanks for the compliment.

I never have experimented with either of those chamberings. The 35-303 sounds like it would make a dynamite game getter!

A 35-303 would be remarkably similar to a 35 Winchester with ballistics approaching the 358 Winchester. An option for one who wants to play with a Lee Enfield. When I was a kid, I dreamed of having a Lee Enfield barreled in 375/303 and using Speer 235 grain bullets. It dropped elk and moose with aplomb and body-slammed deer. Of course, all of this effectiveness happened only in my undeveloped mind where the cartridge and rifle remained. Today, I could easily build this if I wanted to but I doubt it will happen. GD

The 30-303 book has been well received. As a result, I had to get more in to cover Christmas orders. For any 24 Hr Campfire members who wish to order The 30-303 Book, The Accurate Lee Enfield or Shooting/Reloading the 303 British/303 Epps, I will include Loose Reckonings, which includes some of the poems I've posted here. 27 in all. Some family pictures - four generations from what I counted. 6x9 format. 57 pages. Read it yourself or use it as a stocking stuffer.

You can PM me for prices or any questions. PayPal or EMT (Canada)

Single mailings within Canada, $6 CDN. To the US, $11 CDN. Internationally, $22 CDN.

The 30-303 Book - $25.99 + postage
The Accurate Lee Enfield - $26.99 + postage
Shooting/Reloading the 303 British/303 Epps - $26.99 + postage

The weak Cdn dollar makes this a good buy for people in the US. Our dollar is worth 30% less than yours, making these books about $18.50 US.
