I've tossed a lot of cash in the general direction of deer-killing in the last year or so, but for whatever reason the last three that ended up in the freezer got there via crossbow. Already on the scoreboard this year, and got my Earn-a-Buck doe at the same time. Any of those deer, and two of the three I took in 2016, could have easily been whacked with almost any firearm I have, even my 4" .357.
Actually, I know the reason. Despite the ballistic handicap, hunting during the early season is much easier because the deer are moving naturally for the most part, not running for their lives from old fatsos like me, the same reason I used to see so many deer while squirrel hunting. It's also easier to stay still when not freezing. Soon, the leaves will start to turn, and I'll be enjoying that sight too.
