Just acquired this Bergara barrel in 308 Winchester.
But, should she be a 300 H&H???

Absolutely. .308 is worthless unless it's belt fed.

One wonders why the people on this board think that this cartridge is no good. Okay, I think I know. It's hard to shoulder a helicopter and shoot it accurately.

Personally, I'd leave it as it is.

Do what makes you all tingly, but I'd suggest you check prices and availability of brass and/or ammo before jumping in with both feet. An ordinary WinMag might be more practical, if practicality matters. Chances are, you'd be the only kid on the block with one.

The 308 and the 300 are ok, but like the 30-06 they are so bland.
The 300 H&H is classic cool...😎
Think Wimbledon.....

LEE has dies and brass isn't an issue.....

Appears we're going with tingly.

Have fun.

Not tingly, just accurate.
Only accurate rifles and rounds are interesting.....

I vote for the 300 H&H. I've got a soft spot for not everyday calibers.

Same here. Currently have my eye on a 45-70 Encore barrel also....

The 45/70 is probably the most fun caliber I've had. You can load it from mild to wild.

It may brand me as one of the Fuddier Duddies, but my SOP is to not take on something that may present logistic issues unless it's to keep some compelling gun in the game (or get it back in) when there are equal or better choices for the same purpose that are standard offerings. "Unusual" isn't compelling unless it's paired with something more tangible. The Ruger Boddington Number 1s are good examples of ones I think make the cut: collectable, nice wood, etc. I wouldn't spend the bucks on altering an Encore like yours when there are oodles of perfectly good Winmag specimens to be had, and with barrels long enough to show some improvement. Your .308 looks like a 24".

Not my gun or money, but you asked..........

Good luck, however you go.

Well, I agree 100%. That's why I bought the Ruger #3 in 25-35. I'm the only old vart on the block with one, and all of my teeth are still tight. I can shoot it all day. But, once in a different life I'd probably go with the H&H. I always wanted one, and you can load it down if need be.

PS Pappy. Barley & Hops closed up shop, we need to find a new watering hole.

I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.
