Finally got out on the next to the last day of our early goose season.
Place I hunt, finally started irrigating.
3 of us had our limits in 45 minutes.

Looks like a great time. We have sandhills crossing over the valley, but they are somewhere up in the ionosphere. Can hear but not see them. Birds are on the move.

I've been hearing geese traveling at night for a week now, that is a sign the migration is starting. Swans are showing up in unusual places and are beginning to flock up too. When they are heard, freeze up is close at hand.

Our early goose season ended a month ago. We've been in the regular season for a few weeks. The crops are just beginning to be harvested in the area, it is about a month late. That has made field hunting tough along with it being so rainy. I've done mostly pass shooting the occasional bird as even the local hay fields are way behind their last cutting.

Looks like you all had a great time.

I remember the days way back in Connecticut when it was a one goose limit. Not many guys hunted them back then. But I still loved setting up for them and gunning them.

I remember when shooting a goose got your picture in the local paper if not one of the Twin Cities papers. I was so proud of my first picture and the awe of fellow classmates when one of the pictures made it to the Minneapolis Star. Now, geese are denigrated and considered problems rather than a rare sight.

There weren't many places to find geese regularly, the Lac Quie, Parle refuge was one. I leased some land out there with a bunch of others for several years before being hired by a guide service. That was a mostly fun time and it was pretty easy to get the one bird limit as there were over 150,000 geese on the refuge at the start of peak with numbers going higher at the peak. Of course, that was if the clients could shoot. If they could, a single family group would do it. If not, then one hoped for the flights to head their way. When the limit was raised to two birds we thought we died and went to heaven.

Great pictures, thanks for sharing. When they are right on top of you and honking loudly, its fantastic.
