Well thats what my truck comes out to in Grains...after driving 83 miles Rt to work an back all these years , i hit a moose in the head at 55+ mph, no brakes no turning ...just a pass thur ... moose in the center line of road facing N , im headed N , a southbound car in the other lane rite between us in one mega sec she lifts an turns her head to the right...bammm front ds 1/4 pannel of my 2500hd gets it hard no head lights on that side and no "coolers" in front of the radiator..she even skiped the door to land on the side of the bed in front of the rear tire...pushing the lower 1/2 of the bed in 3" ..all my gauges are normal so i stay steady on the gas all the way to town, when i got to the exit for west freds i let off the fuel, then the trans temp stated to climb regular 120... along with some big space in the gears.. not much time left now !... i got to freds an parked it so it would be easy for the tow guy ..trans at 150... , well its at the body shop now, hope they got a good mechanic to work on it to ...

Bummer! But glad no people were harmed in that event. We only have deer and elk, but I have a serious roo guard on the front of my rig. It works quite well, as a lady in a van center punched us a couple yeas back. It put the front end of her rig even with the windshield (seriously totaled). Did bend our bumper a bit, but never touched any portion of the pickup body.

7000 grains in a pound. Your truck has to weigh more than 766 pounds.

Glad you're OK. Who gets the meat?

Just a silly little order of magnitude.

Hey Atv, it's a bummer when something like that happens, but glad no one was hurt. Trucks can be fixed or replaced.

That sucks. Glad all are ok! They are a big fear of mine here. Though I've seen bears go across the road and thinking man if you ever got on top of one of them it would be like being on top of a pig and be really nasty too.

We all try to drive to avoid things. I dont know of anyone thats not had a bender at least once...

Haven’t hit a critter bigger than a dog. (Knock wood).
That doesn’t count the power pole that October morning years ago. Turned my dodge bumper into a Chevy bumper (bow tie).

Glad nobody got hurt. I've taken a few whitetails with half ton pickups but never a moose. Those suckers are enormous. Dug out my notes on deer kills regarding what weapon, bullet, etc. was used and back in the early 1990's i used approximately a 24 million, 500 thousand gr. projectile at about 51.3 fps.(if I did the math properly back then),... AKA a '79 F-100 at about 35-40 mph, IIRC. Thus reinforcing Elmer Keith's old theory about heavier bullets at lower velocity.

An F-150 at about 30mph, braking hard, into the butt end of a running moose will cripple both. At least long enough for the Trooper who came by 2 minutes later to put a shotgun slug into the cow's head and give me a ride home.

Could have been worse - at 2 a.m..he might have reversed the order ..... smile

That truck was too small for 2 adults, 2 young boys and a 100lb Lab anyway. Two weeks later I was driving a 1990 Chev 3500 crewcab with 30K on it, at a very good price. Missed many a moose with it over the next few years, some by inches. Things were everywhere! Including one where, on an icy road 200 yards from my driveway, I missed the moose, but not the trees.... frown

I finally got rid of that old beast about 2 weeks ago. I'm down to the '03 Ram 3500 crewcab now. I feel almost nakid!

One time, just outside of Burns (how many stories start like that?), I watched the mini van in front of me drill an angus steer in the middle of the night. Could not figure out what was happening for a second, then I saw a couple other black cows on the side of the road. Fence was down or a gate left open I guess. Nobody injured physically, but they were shaken up in a major way. That was before I had a cell phone, and it sure would have been handy.
