I was even younger then that, just shy of a year, but I wasn't worried, heck, we weren't even IN the US, we were safe in Frankfurt, West Germany... shocked

I was just into the seventh grade and kinda got the vibes from my parents and the news that it was intense but at that age I had other things to worry about.

A guy that used to work with me was a young Marine at the time on a troop ship ready to go. Said a priest said last rites for them.

We didn't bother with that. Too close to Site R (a hole in a mountain not too far from DC, Alternate Joint Communications Center and a key AUTODIN switching center among other things) which would have been scheduled for several megaton range warheads. I remember Dad living at Site R for several days. The tension on post was palpable, one of those things where even kids were on there best behavior.

Yes, the cold war days. Better than a hot war.

That and Kennedy was high as a kite from pain meds when he met with Khrushchev the first time in Vienna. Khrushchev thought he was a piker.

I was 23 then and remember it well. Folks were nervous for 13 days.

I saw a made for TV movie called the day after or some such thing when I was very young. Nuclear war truly scares the [bleep] out of me and I began to realize exactly what we did to Japan.

Nuclear war must NEVER be allowed to happen again.

Of course the survivor ould have to remain in the bunker for years and to repopulate the earth we'd have to take extraordinary measures. Say ten women for each man. Hmm?

I was still 2 years from being born but my Dad remembers being home and seeing Hawk SAM batteries on Miami Beach.

If you'd like to read a really excellent book about the aerial recon program over the island I recommend Blue Moon over Cuba . Tons written about the politics of the event but this is really about the tactical squadrons that did the photo work.

The bulk were Navy RF-8's but it also covers the RF-101 and U-2. Well worth a read.

Not an accurate clip but it always gets me smiling - Other than Major Rudy's U-2 being bagged (and the book covers that Russian FU in detail) no planes suffered any damage.

I was 7 at the time and remember the school drills.

Bill O'Reilley's book "Killing Kennedy" has a good account of it.

I was 10 and remember it well. 'Duck and Cover', had been taught that since the 1st grade. Probably because we lived near Dyess and were told all military bases would be targets. By the time the Cuban Crisis happened, we lived in La. and didn't practice the drill. We watched it unfold daily, on the news, and I was old enough to know it was serious. There for a few days, I, along with everyone I knew, was really worried. I remember a teacher in school getting on to a group of us for talking about it at recess, didn't want us to scare the younger kids.

Was ballpark 13 years old and quickly grew bored with the duck and cover drills we were doing at school. Classroom desks didn't present much cover from my perspective.
