Venturing into the tamarack swamp on Saturday, to set up.

Luckily, my lil 350 fortrax is light & will probably float.

Shot the slug gun and the AR with a different scope on it yesterday. All went well, but I doubt the AR will see the woods, as there's 4 deer rifles ahead of it. We're just outside that Chronic Wasting area up by Emily. If I kill one Saturday, I'll go pick up a CWD tag and try for a doe the next day in the CWD area.

20 ga. Mossberg 500 Bantam. I added on an extra recoil pad to stretch the stock out a bit, and it wears a rifled cantilever barrel with an old K 2.5 Weaver scope. 2" high at 50 yards puts me 2" low at 100 yards. It likes Hornandy SST slugs. 2" group at 100 yards.

You can use scoped on muzzle loaders now. I'll use that anymore instead of a shotgun these days. I don't have anything with a slug barrel. That cheap ass muzzle loader shoots as good as I can.

It's pretty remarkable how well the front stuffers can shoot.

Man am I getttng the itch for deer season! I'm just sitting here thinking about all the young 'uns getting ready to go chase some deer. We don't have any youngsters in our group right now. Kinda miss having a kid around asking lots of questions, and learning from us old farts. I think I might have find a kid here in the neighborhood and take him out with us. Nothing like passing it on to the next generation. Good luck to all the guys showing the next generation how it's done.

The boy and I spend a lil bit of time in the woods on Saturday morning. He's pretty fired up. There are some decent bucks on his trail cam by one of his spots.

He also bought a ladder stand with his own money. We'll put that together this week and get in the woods in a few weeks. The red wagon will be loaded up Wednesday night and pointed west to SD early Thursday morning. We're pretty excited for that!!

Good luck and have a great time.

Wyoming elk report. Wife shot her bull about 6 pm yesterday and shorty after will taking care of it another bull stepped out of the trees to see what was going so I shot him. Then we had the fun of a 5 to 6 hour ride in the dark back to the truck. Have I mentioned how much fun it is to ride a horse down the mountain in the dark.

I told the guide I wanted a nice juicy young bull and that is what I got. During the night a griz dragged my elk into the woods took a big bite out of a hind quarter and took the head. We could not find it, the head, did get the meat.

Wife and I saw 11 bull elk yesterday and the guide saw 3 more for a total of 14. The wife's bull was with about 12 to 16 cows, never could get a good count before she shot him.

We knew the bear was in the area before we got the elk because we cut the grizzly track in the fresh elk tracks. This made for some tense time while working on the elk. It should be noted the guide had a 44 mag on his hip and an 870 with slugs close by.

We were hunting south of Yellowstone N.P.. Up out of turpine [sp] meadows. If you heard of the guide the bear killed last year we were in a couple of miles of that.

Joe probably has a few left if you need one.

You need to carry one at all times up at the Chickenbuck, the swamp squids are going crazy with all this water...

Joe, will hip boots be enough? Do hunters need chest waders or full scuba gear and wet suits this year?

It all depends on which stand you go to, the only stand you’ll need waders for is Taylor’s, the rest I think you could get by with knee high boots.

We made it back from SD last night. It was a fun, beautiful, and successful trip on a few fronts.

1) We got to visit Ryan, Mrs. Ryan, and the Boss...the little girl that runs the house. laugh They're always so welcoming. Ryan threw some elk tenderloin on the smoker that happened to be ready when he skinned the deer. I'm sure me fumbling around doing it was driving him nuts since he does about a dozen a year. lol

2) We got to get boots on the ground in an area Jack and I would like to hunt in the future. Beautiful country, much, much less flat than it looks on Google Earth. Jack got to see some bucks while hunting and learn a few new ways to hunt.

3) Jack made some meat!
