I'm planning on taking my 99F in 250-3000 deer hunting in November. Both the 87 grain Speer and 90 grain Sierra shoot well, but I wonder if those 80 grain Barnes TTSXs might just stabilize in a 1-14" twist. Has anyone tried them?

one way to find out, most every rifle shoots different so it best to shoot and determine

I believe that they are too long for a 1-14" ROT, but they work fine in a 1-10" barrel.

I never tried them but I have not heard good reports in 1-14

About ten years back I asked the same question regarding Barnes 80 TTSX bullets..

Even after we had milled the blue tips off the Barnes TTSX bullets these projectiles were too long, key-holed at 100yd targets and grouped far better out of a modern Model 14 250 SAV then out of my older 99s with a 1-14 twist.

As for damage on varmint sized game, the 80 grainers were pure murder. I'd show you a pic but it's just a bloody gaping 3" hole in a groundhog.

Thanks for the info, guys. I didn't think they would work, now I know for sure. I will stick with the 90 grain Sierras. Back in the 1980s I shot a lot of woodchucks here in NJ and in NY with those Sierras and with the 87 grain Sierras. I loaded them to about 3,200 fps, a mild 25-06 load. They sure tore up a chuck! I figured they would kill a deer, too. Sierra says they are deer bullets. Maybe I will test them this year using my little 99F.
