Be careful when calling squirrels, I was sitting under an oak tree calling squirrels when I suddenly heard a whap whap above me, I looked up and saw a a great horned owl putting on his/her brakes when they saw that I was NOT a squirrel, He/She stopped in time about a foot above me.. I had a blaze orange leather cap on.. but I am sure I would of been damaged If the attack hadent been stopped in time.. anyone else have similar experiences..

Had a Golden Eagle knock my hat off when calling coyotes once...does that count?

Had a great horned owl do that to me while sitting in my 16’ Tripod. I damn near jumped out of that thing!

I also saw a small squirrel with a warble on its belly, it was only about six feet from me and was easy to see. shouldent that problem be over by now, or does it take a frost to stop it as I have been told before.. how long does it take a warble to complete its cycle?

Owls, hawks, coyotes, grey fox, bobcat, deer, crows, woodpeckers and blue jays... and squirrels.

I was in full camo walking through an overgrown field toward a hardwood ridge.... there was a hawk way up in the sky,,, I tried out my squirrel call.... the hawk went into a power dive.... I threw the shotgun up crosswise to block at the last moment... I'll never forget the expression on the hawks face the last thing rodents see in this world.... or the expression on the hawk when it realized I was 200 pounds of human....

People talk about UFOs making gravity defying turns.... hawks can too grin

I bet he was silent during his power dive and you could only hear him when he made a U turn.

I don't remember a sound change.... probably was... I do remember thinking at the last moment that, "This may not have been my best thinking.."... It was the same voice I heard years later when I'd pulled off the road to give chase to 3 bob cat kittens that had run across the road with their mamma.

I was gaining on the kittens as they were scrambling up a bank.... The voice said, "Hey dummy, look over there".... Mom had stopped running and was crouched giving me the worst case of stink eye I'd ever seen. I don't think I hit reverse thrusters as fast as the hawk did but it was close.

Had something similar when I saw a patch of brown disappear into a bush, I literally parted the leaves the the barrel of my .44 only to see a cute little bear cub sitting two feet away. I was all caught up in the warm fuzzy moment before it dawned on me I'd better find out where its Mom was!

I never saw her, and never gave her a chance to have a go at me...I left!

Sans dignity and reluctance...

Had a redtail hawk swoop in and steal my foam rubber hen decoy one turkey season, land owner found it a few months later about three miles away.

Coyote came running to my "dying crow" call one winter day. I thought he was coming fast until he saw me, then I saw what fast really looks like. Critter had the funniest look, reminded me of Wile E. Coyote when a plan goes terribly wrong.

I had a penguin dive out of the sky and almost peck my eyes out while I was eating a can of sardines on a cold frosty snowy day under a palm tree in Puerto Rico a number of years ago!

I gotta practice my squirrel calling. I use a call I picked up at a gun show a few years ago and so far I haven't attracted anything whatsoever with it. Years ago I got a fox to spring out of the bushes onto a hen turkey decoy. The instant he hit it, he knew it was bogus and took off so fast I couldn't get my shotgun on him fast enough.

Instead of calling squirrels, I prefer to text them.
