This book, in the J.P. Beaumont series, has Beaumont, now a retired Seattle detective with a new Private Investigator license, pulled into an investigation by a man who shows up at his front door with the man's new born granddaughter. The man's daughter has had a tough life since leaving home as a hostile and rebellious teen. Drugs have done their job on her and after she is taken to a hospital to deliver her baby she leaves and leaves the baby there. Sounds horrible, but she knows it's best for the baby. But then her estranged father has to come from Texas to Washington to care for the premature newborn after it is released from the hospital neonate unit.
Well, it turns out that there is a one night stand in the history. The story goes from there to include murder, real estate shenanigans and attempts to steal/divert an inheritance.

It's a good read.
