Poofter used to be a popular derogatory term for males over here in the 70s, 80s and 90s - when being gay was unacceptable. Actually you could use it to offend anyone - they didn't necessarily have to be gay. If they were anything less than a butch, care free, brave male, they were probably a poofter.
Even showing emotional weakness by telling your wife that you loved her could result in being labelled as a poofter.

Paul Just be aware that the meaning changes with the context and or use of the word, for instance "how are you going you old poofter" is a friendly greeting that will elicit an ongoing conversation. Whilst "What do you want poofter" will generally get your teeth smacked. It doesn't seem to be in use with the younger generation in the Southern states, but does linger in Queensland, and in the vocabulary of we old fat ignorant pricks with a burr up our arse. Funny thing is that all Australian profanity is subject to and dependant upon tone and context, and when you think you are being screwed you may only be being screwed with...we can be an odd pack of ćunts. Generally Australians are really pissy if they are being overly polite to you.

As far as I can tell it refers to a gay so loose he can't make a loud one. In America it remains somewhat cryptic and won't turn into a [bleep] and gives a nice mental image. Another handy British term is "load of waffle" when "a load of bs" is on the crude side.
