I have an older loader tractor. Starter solenoid went out a couple years ago. Got it replaced. This year, it's out again.

What would be causing/contributing to this?

Had the tractor for 15-16 years and never had any issues until just this past year or so.

Just guessing, a weak battery, or maybe the starter is going bad?

Had a 1991 Ford Pickup that would not start one day on a trip to town. Friend was with me, and we found a piece of wire and jumped across the posts of the solenoid, and started the truck. That piece of wire was behind the seat as long as I owned the truck, which was several years. Never used it again. Solenoids can do strange things. miles

It’s all but impossible to get alternator and starter parts that aren’t made in China. Their failure rate out of the box must be astronomical.

The life span of anything "electronic" may be 5 minutes, or 50 years...

Whoever came up with the word solenoid, and how did they do so?

Since you asked, I did your Google dirty work for you. You're welcome. smile

From Wikipedia:
A solenoid (/ˈsoʊlənɔɪd/,[1] from the French solénoïde, a modern coinage based on Greek σωληνοειδής sōlēnoeidḗs "pipe-shaped"[2]) is a type of electromagnet, the purpose of which is to generate a controlled magnetic field through a coil wound into a tightly packed helix. The term was invented in 1823 by André-Marie Ampère to designate a helical coil.[3]

Thanks for doing the research - much appreciated, but I still wonder why Mr. Ampere chose such a weird-sounding (and largely unpronounceable) word when he could have selected something else.
