Was working up a load for my son's .270 yesterday. Have an 8 lb jug of 7828ssc and thought that should work pretty well. Used two different bullets, the 130gr Nosler Bal Tip and the 140gr Hornady SST. Started with 58gr with the Noslers and 56.5gr with the Hornady's going up in .5 gr increments, maxing out at 60gr with the 130s and 58.5 with the 140s.

Never seen velocities like this with any of my previous .270s. 60gr behind the 130gr Ballistic tips clocked at 3210 and 58.5gr behind the 140gr SSTs clocked at 3150! Both are HOT loads and I won't be loading up any more of them and do not recommend these loads to anyone else. They might atomize someone else's rifle. Pronounced ejector marks on brass. For comparison, my trusty load of 60gr H4831 behind the same 130gr Ballistic tip averages 3060fps.

SDs were very good, with 7828ssc, with some loads showing 5 or 6 fps deviation. Accuracy was also quite good. Luckily there was also accuracy to be found at some more sane pressures with the 130gr moving at a little over 3100 and the 140s moving at 3065.

I'm liking the 7828ssc but be sure to start WAY low and work up. Looking forward to trying it in my .260 also.

Strange...I played with it in my very average marlin. I say average cause it doesn't have a tight chamber but also doesn't have freebore. It seems neither fast or slow. Factory fed 130 clock about 3025.
Just checked my records.
60 grains under a 140 w/rp brass did 2975...very accurate..no pressure signs
58.8 under a 150 hornady w/rp brass did 2890....very accurate.

Maybe you got a hot lot?
I love 7828 ssc in alot of calibers and haven't had any seem warm compared to data...maybe my day is coming lol!

Wow. Never seen 7828 give that much velocity.But I never used the SC stuff. If anything it behaved slower than that.

I use 7828sc in my son's Shilen barreled 270 with 130BTs and also the 130 BST. 59gr with new Rp brass a standard 210 primer and .010 off the lands is extremely accurate, like nearly one hole at 3040fps at 70F.
It shoots so boring well I have stopped any further load development. It shoots submoa out to 525 yds, the furtherest I have a chance to shoot it.

I've also got some old 7828 that came on the metal cans. Velocities and pressures are not nearly as high with it.

Dang it man, I thought I was about finished with my 270 load work until now, guess I will see if I can find a can and try it.

I guess this works out well for me...my nephew wants to start loading for his .270 and we couldn't find any 4831 anywhere but 7828 was available. I was concerned that 7828 might be just a bit slower than optimal, but we have eight pounds of lot number 80424148345 (that's the number on the orange sticker, does that match yours, Hondo?) and we're splitting it. I may try it in 6-284 and .280 Rem, myself.


edit: I just realized mine's not SC...so I guess there won't be any lot number matching.

Btw...re my load info above that was shot at 30 degrees....one could probably say that would be a 40 fps drop over 72degree weather....and more in hotter weather?

7828ssc works great with a 139-grain Hornady in my 7 mag. It works real well with a 200-grain Partition in a 300wsm.

7828SC works well anywhere where RL22 might also work.

Killer good loads for 105 AMAX in the 243 and 243AI.

In my Model 70 Winchester with 140gr Accubonds MRP and RL22
gave the best Velocity, Superformace gave the most accuracy
with only about 25fps less in speed. IMR 7828SCC was almost
as fast but not quite as accurate. With 150gr bullets MRP
was the one I use.

Not a .270 but using Nosler's data for the 150 gr. Accubond, I reached 3010 FPS with the Nosler 150 gr. long range Accubond in a custom Mauser .280 Remington. Accuracy at the 2800 FPS literally duplicated Remington 150 gr. factory ammo but once past that level accuracy went to hell. Haven't tried it in my .270 yet and can't find any more anyway.
According to the Nosler manual #6, 59.0 gr. (Max load) should be doing 2990 FPS with the standard 150 gr. Accubond so as primers are nice and round, and case expansion is normal and I'm only 20 FPS faster than what Nosler got from a 26" barrel and mine a 24" bafrel I think the load should be safe. Now if I can only get those bullets to stick closer together on the target. I do like the SSC version which is what I used. Found a pound of regular 7828 and haven't tried it yet. Just hope that they say they're the same is the truth.

140 grain Partition in .277 with one grain less than max using IMR 7828ssc very accurate in my Sako A7 with WLR primers and WW brass.

I love to use 7828ssc in my .270, and also get 3200fps from 130gr bullets, though mine are Sierra flatbase. The difference is that my chamber is an improved, and the barrel is 24" long. I need just a bit more powder to get there, but that is to be expected from my larger chamber. My rifle is at max safe pressures, so I must believe that your barrel must be a little tighter than
the average(or that your powder is a little faster than the average lot).
I would back off a bit, and have a ball.

Recently have been trying out 7828 long cut in my 270 and 300 win and it shines. 61g in the 270 got 3050 from a 21 inch barrel with 130 interlocks, 58.5 ran 2950 with 140 nbt's with both very accurate. That said R17 beat both by 50fps. In the 300 190 sierras are running 2950 in a 23 inch barrel.

Ive never been a big 270 fan but for many year whenever I was asked to load for one for a friend I used 59g of 7828 and a 150 partition. If they wouldn't spring for partitions it was 150 speer hot cors or hornadys.

Usually ran 2900 to 3000 fps depending on the gun.

Right out of the Barnes manual. Rel 19 , 59.5 grs max load shown. Barnes 130gr TTSX. WIn 70 24" factory Bbl. Barnes says 3211fps. My chrono read 3211 fps also. Tiny groups consistently..

Never tried IMR7828 with 130 grainers. Tried it with 150gr bullets about every decade since the 80's. I've got the half full cans/bottles to prove it. Never came close to beating out H4831 for accuracy or velocity. RL-26 changed all that though.
