In an attempt to get them to behave--, better. I told our youngest two the had an older brother, and sister that were buried in unmarked graves in the grove.

I used to threaten to check then the county jail until they behaved. laugh

As a kid I had a friend whose dad was a deputy sheriff. He lived in the courthouse and ran the jail too.

One weekend I spent the night with my buddy, and we knew nobody was in jail. We bugged him to sleep in the jail... He obliged us... Locked the cell! No TV. No snacks. Nothing...

He finally let us out about 9am the next morning.

We didn't ask again... whistle

Anyone can grow up to be President.

I would tell them I was going to take them to the doctor to get "the shot" to keep from growing. That way tbey would always be my little girl and little boy.

No. They believed me when I said I'd blister their asses if they messed up.

Santa, the Easter Bunny, and yes, we would occasionally turn on cartoons with the sound up high for some “one on one”! When he was a baby, we had one of those windup baby swings that got used an awful lot! grin
Being Dad, I didn’t have to make empty threats. My belt or my hand bought me all the authority I needed to get respect and behavior. Just the idea of getting a “whoopin” was all that was needed.
I know when we were little my Mom would tell us that Gypsies or Goblins would take us if we weren’t good. Dad didn’t have to.
I don’t know if Carol threatened “Big Hunter” with stories or not.

My son was about 3-4 years old and on trips back home, would ask "How much longer to DuBois?"

"Just a little ways" says I and that would hold him.

About the 5th trip, he asked "How many ways to DuBois?"

Busted.
