been considering a short-fat(16") bolt gun in 300 BLK with a TB. Any ideas on an easy action donor swap without feeding or ejection issues? Used Rem 700, Ruger 77 in 223 etc. would like to have a 300yd plinker for use on steel targets.

Two questions- Are you set on 300BLK? And are you handloading? My inclination for overall usefulness would be to run a .308win with subsonics. I don't think for a plinker you'll save a noticeable amount of money with the BLK over .308.

I think the best LH donor action would be a Tikka .223 if you are sure you want to build a 300BLK-

My other two thoughts would be either a LH Ruger American .308 ORRRRRRR take a LH Tikka .473bf, slap a proof pre-fit 308 on it and run 208 AMAX or 225 ELDM subsonic if that is what you want... and you are left with a more potent rifle if you decide to hunt or shoot longer ranges.

I think for a 1-10 the wheelhouse is around the 180s for subs-- 208gr seems to be hit or miss on what some guns will do, my buddy runs them just fine but he has tweaked that load extensively.

But for 225 on up probably 1-8 if it will be dedicated to subsonics. I think a good match for your 1-10 twist would be the 178 ELDM or I know Hornady has a 190gr ELDM and the 190gr Subsonic expanding--I just don't know if they are making those for reloaders or only in factory ammo.

I had a Tikka T3 that was re-barreled to 300 BLK (16.5" threaded bbl) and it was a hoot to shoot. My buddy threatened to commit suicide if I didn't trade it to him so he has it now. It's likely available if you are interested.

I put to gather a Savage 16 Bison 16.5" 1-8 twist heavy varmint barrel threaded 5/8-24....MDT LSS Chassis....Nikon 2.6-10 Prostaff....shoots CEB 190gr. Raptor sub-sonics 5 shots in a ragged 3/8" hole at 100 yards.....

I fear this is an itch that my 308 loaded down to subsonic levels will not scratch!
