Went down looking at trucks with my FIL as he is looking at a new Ram Truck. He is trying to save a buck and is thinking of going with the 6.4 hemi instead of the 6.7 cummins.

Towing wise, this will be used to pull a 7-8k travel trailer and maybe haul around his show car once in a while. - So no issues with capacity or anything like that. And yes, I and Him both know it won't pull like a deisel, but he can also save 7k right off the top. I see they offer this engine with 4:10 gears - seems that would be the way to go?

I did read online some reviews saying the gear rations from 1st-2nd-3rd sucked and it suffered on towing? Thoughts on this engine?

Had the 6.4 in my power wagon and OMG it drank the gas but that was with the 6 speed. Had to sell because it was costing so much to go to work. Power wasn’t anything to write home about either and it had the 4.10 gears.

I have a 2016 Ram 2500 with the 6.4 hemi ( 6 speed) & 3.73 gears.Towing heavy get about 9.9 MPG empty city/highway 14.0 mpg. Truck has been trouble free but only 44,000 miles on the OD.

I have one for work. It pulls a trailer OK. But it’s not wise to pass a gas station while pulling. I get about 7 MPG while pulling. About 10 while empty.

Those 4:10 gears will eat gas. The 3:73's will suck at pulling. All depends on how big of hills your FIL runs around in. I went thru this game about a year ago.Ended up with a Chevy Duramax 2500HD. I get 18 empty on the highway and 12-13 running 16,000 pounds or so. Truck, pop up camper and 3 horse bumper pull trailer.

I talked to quite few guys running the big 6+ L gassers and never met one that bragged about their pulling ability Realizing your FIL is only talking 7K trailer though. Generally though I think FIL will be unhappy with the mileage, but of course the diesels are more expensive to run overall. It is all about compromise I guess

Wife's sister and BIL tow a 38' 5th wheel with the 6.4 Dodge ('14 model year). It works okay for them but I think they feel it's a bit under powered. I think they are towing in the 10k lb range and get around 8 mpg.

Edit to add: I believe they have 3.73 gearing...

He pulled the trigger last night and purchased the truck. 2019 RAM 2500 CC SB 6.4 8speed 4:10 gears. Truck has a ton of options for a base truck - 8.4" Uconnect touch screen, led bed lights, Stainless Running boards, dealer added bedliner, Firestone AT tires, auto 4 wheel drive, sliding rear window....Damn nice truck for around 36k.

Im sure it will tow awesome, but when we test drove it, when he hammered it to get on the freeway, spun the tires and threw us back in our seats - POWERFUL TRUCK.

Pls post up what ur getting for gas mileage, I’m curious if the 8 speed makes a big difference. Maybe I’ll go back to a Power wagon for my next truck if it does.

Congrats on the new purchase!

About 72 mph on freeways, which was most of the trip. Trucks cruises at that speed with little throttle pressure. It takes a lot more throttle to go 77-78. This was on 75 speed limit Michigan freeways. Drove 72ish on Ohio's 70 speed limit.

After putting 12k miles on this truck, I strongly recommend the 4.10 gears over the 3.73.

Idaho's freeway speed limit is 80. With my Dodge diesel, going over 75 is like knocking a hole in the tank. You can almost watch the needle fall.

Speed limit here in ND is 75, so most run 80, me included. My 6.7L Ford will run 13-16MPG @ that speed wind and winter/summer fuel dependent. I've gotten as high as 18 coming home from the lake in the summer but a guy can't depend on a 25MPH tailwind every day. (grin)

People are asking if 3/4 ton trucks can pull 1/2 ton truck weight. I would say yes.
