Just picked this up recently,custom mauser in 375 H&H. Thinking maybe a 1.5x 5 Leupold, but also thinking something up to maybe 7 power? Probably shooting 235-250 grain bullets, and shots to 200 -300 yds.

That screams out for a blister pack Tasco 4x.

Nice looking rifle, though a much larger cartridge than I would want for elk.

Most of my elk rifles have had 3-9x40 scopes on them. Many years ago one of my elk rifles did have a 4-12x40 Tasco on it.

My number one and two elk rifles now both have a 4.5-14x40 Leupold VX 3i CDS scopes.

My .375 RUM has a 2-7x30 Leupold on it. I've shot African game with it at yardages from 30 to 248 yards.

I don't have a definitive scope recommendation, but wanted to say congrats on a beauty of a rifle you have there.

that looks like a very fine rifle ,put a picatinny scope mnts with a Nightforce scope if you have the money

Not doing the picatinny thing, really want to keep it old school , but thanks. Think I might need to find a Leupold 1.5 x 5 . Original owner had a Burris Signature 2-6 on it, but kept the scope. Recoil not bad at all . We were shooting over the hood of my truck, with my down sleeping bag under it. Caught the bag on fire.!!

A Leupold 2.5-8 is never a bad idea for most sporting rifles. If it had sights, I'd say the 1.5-5.

When I hunted with .375s, here is what I used them/scoped them for:
Mod 70 African- PG and elk....1.5x5
Remington 700 BDL SS....PG/elk......2.5x8
Whitworth Express...PG....Nikon Monarch 2.5x8
Remington 700 BDL SS .375 Weatherby....2.5x8
Mod 700 Classic .375 H&H with 1.5x5

Leupold 2.5-8. I used one on my .375 for about 22 years, and never found it lacking! memtb

I use a Leupold 6x42 on mine. May even swap it to a 6x36 with dots. 6’s work well for me and they mount nicely.

I thought the SWFA Ultralight was short on "eye relief"? If it is....not on a .375, thank you, Ha

My 375 H&H Sako with the McMillan stock wears a 1.5-5 X 20 Leupold Vari X III that was for Alaska.

For Elk I'd probably go to a 2.5 - 8 Leupold VX-3 Leave it on 2.5 unless you have a longer shot. The animals I shot in So Africa were all shot on 2.5 power. No problems.

GORGEOUS rifle you have there. Congratulations. I'd recommend a 1.5-5X or something like a 2-7X or 2.5-8X. Nothing larger than that.

Older Zeiss Diavari 3-9x in double dovetail mounts (get rid of that windage rear.) I don't like the 20mm objective lens scopes for a gun that might get used in the dark timber, and the bold Zeiss reticles are a good match for my eyes.

Thanks for all the suggestions. My buddy happen to have a Leupold 2.5x8 lying around, so traded him some ammo for it. Should work fine i'ma hope'in.

A fine choice on the scope. I'd still get rid of the scope mounts. Between the extension ring on the front and the windage rear, I cannot believe there would not be a more solid arrangement to be had.

I need that scope back as far as I can get it. Never had rear windage mounts give me problems, but you have?

Chit can the windage adjustable mounts. Go with something like the leupold prw mounts and rings. They are a much stronger system.

Nice rifle and good choice on the scope. Mine wears the 1.75-6x Leupold in Talley detachable mounts. I have had several issues with Leupold windage adjustable mounts. I would go fixed Talleys unless you add iron sites then detachable. I have also had issues when the rings were directly over a lens element but it looks like that can't be avoided with the scope so far back. I think like Elmer Kieth did that the 375 is an excellent elk cartridge. I think of it as the 30-06 of Africa or the 30-06s bigger brother. They have similar trajectories and are universally useful cartridges.

I am one of those who never had a problem with the Leupold/Redfield STD rings, for whatever reason. I suppose I am one of those "rare few", ha. I've even had hard kickers too, 416 Taylor, 416 Remington, 458 WM and 375 Weatherby. I like them. I never used bigger screws either, just stock. BUT, I do use Loctite on all screws from base up. I'm trying to decide right now what scope I'm going to put on a little Ruger 77 338 RCM. ha I've had great results ( on those hard kickers) with Weaver 1x3, Leupold 2.5 Ultralight, Leupold 2x7, 2.5x8. I once had a Ruger #1 in 458WM with a Bushnell Sportview 4x that was great. I also used a Bushnell Duck til Dawn 1.75x4x (or 4.5) on Marlin 45-70s with heavy loads. worked fine. It just doesn't seem right to me to put a $60 scope on a $700 rifle. ha I zero them and leave them alone, no dialing up and down.

Also target practice is little more fun when you can see your holes in the paper on 10x

Nice looking rifle & scope combo good luck with it. I’ve had problems with that base/ ring set-up. Went dual dovetail on a 7mm& 3-9 Conquest for years with great success and good looks. These days I use the Talley lightweight one piece ad life is simpler. Easy mounting excellent alignment and fast dependable sighting in.

What kind of problems have you guys had with the Windage Adjustable Rear? Once I have it set where I like it. I take each screw out, one at a time, Loctite it, and screw it back, hard. No problems...for me. ?

I used the Weaver 2-10 on several rifles way back. One was on my first 9.3x62 ( a rebarreled Mod 70 FWT) and it was perfect. I will have to locate one. I also really lked/used the Leupold VII 2x7. Very nice scope.

Is your front objective bell resting on the base? That may cause issues if it is. The 2.5-8 is a good scope, but mounting is a trick on magnum length actions when using Redfield style mounts like yours.

Jim, My 9.3 has a monarch 2.5-10x42 In Talley lows.

I used a Sightron Compact 2-10 one year. It was too blurry to use on 10x. It was an OK scope for the 220 Swift I was using at the time as a walking varminter/deer/exotics rifle. Nothing shot over 80yds in Utah nor Texas, 55gr TB

1.75-6x32 or 2-7x. These are both light, so less momentum on the scopes on recoil to tear them apart prematurely.

This magnification range fits well with the trajecotry you’ll like produce with elk bullets in the 375H&H. My Win M-70 375H&H is scoped with a Leupold 1.75-6x32 which wprks well with the Barnes 250 TTSX at 2900 fps I use for PG, similar in size to bull elk.
