Anyone had to relace the Def heater in their ford?

I have a 15 F-450 that threw a cel last week. Ran it to the dealer and she said the def tank heater is bad, need to replace it than obviously do a regen on the particulate filter.

Anyone else done this? How tough is it to replace the tank heater?

Shop wants around $400 of the heater and somewhere in the $600 range to do the whole job.

While not exact, this video is probably pretty close to what you'd be looking at to do the job.

If you have the time, tools and ability, then you could probably do the job yourself. After viewing the video, I'd personally let the dealer handle it.

Is the DPF down too? Maybe your computer allows checking the last regen. Do you have ‘on demand’ regen ability?

My understanding is the DEF injects downstream of the DPF.

Dealer made a comment that the code tripped something and although it isn't in a serious limp mode, it is limited and after the heater is replaced it will require a forced regen.

Anyone have a lead on where to buy a scanner to check codes that would allow me to force a regen on these 6.7s?

The option for driver-forced regen was added after the '11s. Yours may have it via the dash control computer?

Lots of good info at Fordtruckenthusiasts.com LINK

The heater isn't to bad to replace, get the spare tire out of the way, drop the tank shield and then the tank. Get the OEM parts online. Think I paid about 200.00. Never did the regen.

If its not still under warranty i'd be looking at price to get rid of the DEF system instead.

Had to do it last year on my 2015 SRW F-350. The dealer did it for $900 and had it back the next day. Pulling the system and going with a performance chip as I priced it was more. I thought about pulling it and getting improved performance or replacing it and keeping the truck in compliance with regulations ( at the time there was talk about aftermarket shops and owners being fined for removing the system).
